Station Road And Route 9 Flooding Fix Slated For Fall

Residents also ask township officials for help with speeders

The perpetual flooding at the end of Station Road and Route 9 may soon be at an end, Township Council President James J. Byrnes said.

Station Road is slated to be repaved in the fall and a new catch basin installed, Byrnes said at a recent council meeting.

The goal is to catch water that runs off from the nearby BP gas station and funnel it into a lowland area. Drainage that runs parallel to the road will be part of the repaving project, he said.

In other business, several residents at the July 24 Township Council meeting went to the microphone during the public session with concerns about traffic and road maintenance.

Mike Adler of Maryland Avenue said he was concerned with speeding on his street. He said while the township has already installed speed bumps on the street, it has not addressed the problem.

“It’s not working. It’s constant,” said Adler.

He said the cross street with Roosevelt Avenue is a particular problem.

Joe Perez agreed with Adler that speeding on Maryland Avenue needs to be addressed. He asked that digital speed limit monitoring signs be installed on the street.

Byrnes said he would speak with Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele about the speeding problems.

South Seaside Park resident Donald Whiteman thanked council members for agreeing to a road exchange with the county that will see the township gain control of Barnegat Avenue and a portion of 24th Street in exchange for giving the county East Railroad Avenue.

The portion of 24th Street coming under township control is the portion that ends in an “L” shape near the Wheelhouse Marina.

“You didn’t quit,” said Whiteman.

He said the 24th Street area needs drainage improvements that he hoped the township would provide.

Township Attorney Lauren Staiger said in the negotiations to swap the streets, the county said it would be agreeable to future swaps provided the roads are of similar length.
