ReplyRick,
Pharmaceutical companies, like everything else, operate under the rules of supply and demand. If two-thirds of the vaccine lots were left over every year, the vaccine companies would throw out millions of dollars worth of vaccine. That would put them out of the vaccine development business. Many would argue that pharmaceutical companies make millions of dollars and this would not happen. That is not true. In fact, many pharmaceutical companies have shifted to bigger, "blockbuster" drug production - instead of developing vaccines - simply because vaccines cost too much to develop and generate too little revenue. That is a shame, in my opinion, because that leaves people vulnerable to sometimes fatal diseases that could be prevented otherwise. And yes, it is true, the manufacturers base this year's vaccine on the predominating strain from the year before, as well as what is circulating in the Southern Hemisphere. That way, the vaccine can be ready for the following year, otherwise, it would not be available in time. And yes, sometimes, flu variants occur, such as the case with the pandemic strain in 2009. That year, pharmaceutical companies acted to make a vaccine designed specifically for that strain, since it was so prevalent. As far as the mercury in vaccines issue, I would refer you here: http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/SafetyAvailability/VaccineSafety/UCM096228 -

ReplyHi Rick,
I know that the number of vaccines produced seems small, but even with that number, the vaccine uptake by most people is so small, that generally that amount of vaccines is enough...I used to specialize in writing about vaccines and infectious diseases, so I know quite a bit about this topic. This season's flu is very bad. I would encourage people to get their vaccines if they have not done so already. I got my vaccine yesterday, right at the Manahawkin Kmart, after seeing the emergency room at Southern Ocean County Hospital was PACKED with people who already had contracted the virus in our area, or believe they have it. Getting these vaccines right now can be life saving. Just my opinion. - Colleen -

Lisa, I was talking about you with a friend last night. I said that you had this amazing laugh, and you had this knack for making other people laugh. I remember birthday parties when we were younger..St. Rose uniforms that were always a bit too long for your petite stature, and games of Chinese jump rope on the playground. I remember you in your sillier moments, deciding to do back handsprings down the hallways of Freehold Borough, much to the dismay of some of our teachers. I remember you walking into a room full of people that you did know not at my graduation party from Rowan and quickly becoming the life of the party that everyone loved. You have always been light and love, and you will be missed old friend. Rest in peace beautiful girl.
