Storm Debris Pick-Up Will End On January 16

Residents given an extra two weeks to dispose of Sandy-damaged items

Township officials have extended the final Superstorm Sandy debris pick-up date until Jan. 16 throughout Berkeley, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. They had originally planned to cut off pick-up on Dec. 31 to all sections but South Seaside Park and Pelican Island, but two more Nor'easters hit the Jersey Shore. "In light of the recent storms, I'm open to suggestions," Township Council President James J. Brynes said at a recent council meeting. "We really need to have a stop date so we can get reimbursement from FEMA." "I'd personally go along with another two weeks," Township Councilman Thomas Grosse said. There will be no set schedule for Christmas tree pick-up, but the public works department will be picking them up, according to the …

Berkeley To Partner With Ocean County For Storm Debris Removal Services

Extra help will ease load on township Public Works employees, mayor says

Township officials are poised to enter into a shared services agreement with Ocean County for Hurricane Sandy storm debris removal, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "We hope to start with them as soon as possible," Amato said Thursday night. "Our employees are working extremely hard and doing a fantastic job under a very difficult circumstance." Berkeley Township's ocean and waterfront sections in South Seaside Park, Pelican Island, Glen Cove, Good Luck Point and other parts of Bayville were especially hard hit. "Berkeley has the most waterfront in the county," Amato said. "We want to help our guys and expedite the cleaning process." The township has already suspended recycling pickups for the time being, until the storm debris has been …

Public Works on the Road All Week to Pick Up Storm Debris

Anything storm-related, including leaves, will be picked up at curbside

The Berkeley Township Public Works Department is going from neighborhood to neighborhood all week to pick up any debris from Hurricane Irene. "We've been out there all week," said Sanitation and Recycling Coordinator Mark Vannella. "We'll get anything storm-related." Tree limbs and brush do not have to be tied or bundled for the pick-up, Vannella said "We are excusing that part of the ordinance," he said. Leaves must be bagged, the same way they are handled during spring and fall leaf collections, Vannella said. "There's a lot out there," he said. We've gotten about 12 garbage truckloads so far in two days." Residents who don't want to wait for the trucks can bring any debris to the township's recycling center on Pinewald-Keswick Road. The…
