Christie Addresses Easement Holdouts at Town Hall Meeting on LBI

More than 600 people gathered for the town hall at St. Francis Parish Center.

As the deadline for signing easements is tomorrow, Governor Chris Christie took time at his town hall meeting on Long Beach Island today to warn holdouts that they don't have much longer before he "calls them out."  More than 600 people gathered for the town hall at St. Francis Parish Center, where Christie explained further details about the $1.83 billion announced Monday. Christie urged residents and business owners interested in taking advantage of the program to visit www.sandyhelp.nj.gov or call 855-sandybz for grant information. Not surprisingly, many of the questions from many of the Long Beach Island-area residents in attendance centered on rebuilding and applying for funds to help with rebuilding.  Christie said that eligible …

Prince Harry Coming to Jersey Shore With Gov. Christie to Chaperone

British royalty visiting areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy

Governor Chris Christie told his NJ 101.5 listening audience he'll be chaperoning the Prince of Wales when he visits the Jersey Shore in May. “I am going to be spending the entire day with Prince Harry,” the governor said. The prince's exploits in Las Vegas became tabloid fodder and the "Ask the Governor" radio show asked how to prevent some bad press during his trip to New Jersey. "I'm thrilled that he's willing to come, he wants to come and see the destruction for himself firsthand," Christie told NJ 101.5, "and he wants to be helpful." Prince Harry will be visiting the United States May 9-15 to visit survivors of Superstorm Sandy and to promote charities he supports that help injured service men and women in the United States and the UK…

UPDATE: Christie Predicts FEMA Will Scale Back Flood Maps

Governor provides update on rebuilding, with focus on flood maps and Blue Acres buyout, and plenty of anecdotes

Gov. Chris Christie predicted the Federal Emergency Management Agency will scale back tough new flood maps it issued last December, according to news reports. Those maps place many more properties in flood zones, requiring many of them to be elevated if their owners don't want to see flood insurance rates soar, according to reports. The initial FEMA flood maps, which could create thousands more in insurance premiums and have residents raising their houses feet off the ground, are "too aggressive," said Gov. Christie at Thursday's town hall meeting. He was addressing a packed crowd of officials and residents in the Hurricane Sandy damaged town of Manasquan, and Christie returned to the complicated and controversial topic of what would …

@ clamdigger, prior to the release of the preliminary maps expected in August, municipalities that are NFIP participants will be provided with a work map to identify "obstructions" to wave activity within their boundaries. It is to the benefit of the municipalities and their residents to provide FEMA with "solid" information that can be included in the overland wave propagation component of the …   more ›

Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford is now nominated to serve as a Superior Court judge, according to an email from Gov. Christie's office on Tuesday afternoon. Judge Ford was an admirable Judge, however, under the influence of “the invitation card of Ocean County Politicians Joe Vicari and the William Polhemus autographed little gold star Ocean County Sheriff badge stickers” and Peterson’s May 30, 2008 Order, and Foster’s Fraudulent rulings, despite her marvelous past record, on July 10, 2012, she made an un-cognizable “Administrative Dismissal” under …   more ›

State Urges Preparations for Major Coastal Storm to Impact New Jersey

Tonight's commute will be "treacherous," says state Police and Emergency Management

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service, is monitoring a major coastal storm expected to impact the state today and tomorrow.   State emergency management officials anticipate coastal flooding, high wind conditions, snow, sleet, and even blizzard conditions in the northeast corner of the state, according to a prepared statement from state Emergency Management.   The State Emergency Operations Center in West Trenton will be activated at 7 a.m. today, and will remain open as long as necessary to meet anticipated challenging conditions. "This is a dangerous storm; and we ask motorists to be careful while driving. There is also the potential for downed trees and wires because of wind …

Christie Says 'This is Our Katrina' as State Prepares to Rebuild from Hurricane Sandy

Governor surveys Seaside Park, vows to keep state's rebuilding needs on minds of nation

Speaking from a mangled boardwalk unlike the memories of his Jersey Shore childhood, Gov. Chris Christie said the Ocean County barrier island was still too unsafe for residents to return to, but vowed a return to normalcy for most of New Jersey on Monday. "The power will be on, schools will be open, water is safe, gas is available," Christie said as he described what Monday in New Jersey will look like. "We're ending the power restoration phase," he said. "On Monday, we begin the rebuilding phase." He pledged all power would be restored Sunday, that the evacuation of Long Beach Island would be lifted Saturday, and gas rationing would end before the new week. Monday, Christie would begin the discussion of how to rebuild that which is …

Christie: 'I Don't Know' Who Romney Will Pick for VP

The governor accuses statehouse Democrats of holding his tax cut plan 'hostage' during a stop in Manasquan.

Gov. Chris Christie said today he does not expect to be former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's pick for vice president. "Hopefully (Romney) picks a smart, well-qualified person who's ready to be president and ready to support him as president," Christie said Monday in Manasquan. "Who that's going to be? I don't know. I assume we're going to hear relatively soon what his decision is." The governor, who is set to head across the U.S. this week to campaign for Romney, kicked off his tour of the Jersey Shore at the Manasquan Pavillion, where he touted the tax cut plan that he said statehouse Democrats are "holding hostage." Christie, fresh off what he described as much-needed vacation after getting into a verbal scuffle with a passerby on the…

Freeholder Wants Governor to Address JCP&L Issues

Freeholder Vicari's letter to Christie complains about utility company's service, asks for better Ocean County representation to BPU

June 18 letter as submitted from Ocean County Freeholder Joseph Vicari: Dear Governor Christie: With the arrival of the summer season, I remain concerned about the ability of Jersey Central Power & Light Co. to provide reliable service not only to our year round population, but also to thousands more seasonal guests and businesses. I do not need to remind you of the problems our state, and specifically Ocean County faced last year in the wake of Hurricane Irene. More than 87,000 Ocean County businesses and residences lost power, many for more than a week. Our senior citizens suffered the most, and many businesses lost hundreds of thousands in lost revenue. As you recall, we spoke frequently about the problem last August when you phoned …

UPDATED: Christie Calls for Tax Cuts, Education Reform

New Jersey governor discussed his priorities in annual State of the State address.

Governor Christie called for a 10 percent cut in state income taxes and mapped out a comprehensive education and pension reform plan in his second annual State of the State Address Tuesday.  Making several references to a "New Jersey Comeback," the Republican governor claimed the state has turned a corner from the "dark days of 2010" and touted some of his accomplishments: capping property tax increases, lowering the unemployment rate and scaling back benefits for public workers. "I will not permit anyone to re-impose the tax raising, overspending, irresponsible ways of our past which led to our dark decade of joblessness in New Jersey," Christie told the senate and assembly members gathered in the Statehouse.  "Stand strong with me and I …
