Flood Watch, Wind Advisory in Effect for Shore

No snow predicted in mid-week storm, however

It won't be a repeat of the 2010 post-Christmas blizzard, but a coastal storm will bring rain, high winds and the threat of flooding to the Shore area Wednesday into Thursday. A coastal flood watch was in effect for Monmouth and Ocean counties and a wind advisory stretched the entire length of the shoreline from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Rain was forecast to begin falling across the region by 1 p.m., forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly predicted. Wind gusts were forecast to reach up to 40 m.p.h. during the afternoon Wednesday and up to an inch of rain was possible. Heavy rain is forecast to continue through Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with as much as two additional inches falling. Wind gusts could …

Have to believe this is the new normal. The bay had to fill with sand giving runoff no where to go except to flood the low lying areas.   more ›

Public Works Prepped For Coastal Storm, Mayor Says

Flooding expected east of Bayview Avenue

Township officials are taking precautions as a coastal storm begins to lash Ocean County, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. "We do not anticipate any accumulation of snow, just driving wind and rain," Amato said. "However, as a precaution, all of our sanding and salting trucks are ready to go." Since Ocean County is under a coastal flood watch, Public Works employees have barricades on trucks, since flooding is expected east of Bayview Avenue in the Bayville section of the township, the mayor said. As of 4 p.m., Bayview Avenue was still clear of water, but the tidal marshes were filling up. High tide in the back bay areas is expected later this evening. "All of our normal public works functions are operating at 100 percent," the mayor said. "…

Some Brick Neighborhoods 'Strongly Encouraged' to Evacuate

Coastal storm bearing down on the region

As the latest in a string of coastal storms began to bear down on Brick Township, officials were asking residents of some neighborhoods to be prepared to evacuate. Residents in areas that are prone to flooding, which include all areas east of Old Hooper Avenue; and Princeton Avenue, east of Beaver Dam Road "are strongly encouraged to make preparations and evacuate the area prior to 8 p.m. this evening," said Brick Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard in a prepared release Wednesday afternoon. That swath of land includes the mainland areas hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy, including Shore Acres, Baywood and the streets off St. Lawrence Boulevard. Residents were also being encouraged to move their vehicles to higher ground, Reinhard said. "Residents …

Capt. Neil , Dredging will not affect the tidal level of the bay, it will simply make it deeper in the dredged areas. Minus flood gates like are used in the Netherlands, the tidal level is controlled by the source, in this case it's ultimately the Atlantic Ocean.   more ›

Snow flurries Possible With Coastal Storm On The Way

National Weather Service says autumn storm on Saturday expected to start around 6 a.m., coastal flooding possible

An autumn storm packing winter power is tracking up the east coast, and while Ocean and Monmouth counties are expected to get mostly rain, the shore may see a few snow flurries Saturday night. Meteorologist Valerie Meola of the National Weather Service's Mount Holly office said a nor'easter-like system will hit the area before 6 a.m. Saturday. "In most coastal areas, we'll see rain," she said, "but there may be a few flakes that mix in," especially as temperatures drop into the low 30s Saturday night. The NWS has also issued a coastal flood advisory for the area Saturday, as storm conditions may combine with unusually high tides to push water into low-lying areas along New Jersey's bays and oceanfront. The same storm may dump up to a few …
