Berkeley, Central, Seaside Heights Students To Return To School Monday

Seaside Heights Elementary School will be housed at Central Regional, superintendent says

Students in the Berkeley Township and Central Regional school districts will get back to hitting the books on Monday, superintendents of both districts say. Seaside Heights students will be returning as well -- as many of them as the district is able to locate -- and they will be attending school at Central Regional High School. "We had a meeting with our teachers this morning and they will be contacting as many families as possible," said Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides, superintendent of the Central Regional and Seaside Heights Elementary School districts, told the Seaside Heights Borough Council and residents on Wednesday night. Parents whose children attend Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School students are being asked to drive their …

Central Regional Board Meets Thursday to Discuss Annual School Violence Report

Annual disclosure of crime, bullying now required

District officials are expected to outline the amount of violence and vandalism in Central Regional, in an annual report Thursday. The Central Regional School Board will meet 7 p.m. Thursday in the district board conference room to discuss the annual Violence and Vandalism report, required once a year of all school districts, said board secretary Kevin O'Shea. The report outlines the incidents of violent crime, theft and vandalism at school, compiled from interviews and reports from police, teachers, counselors and more over the 2011-2012 school year. The state Department of Education requires public school districts to compile an annual report detailing violence and vandalism in their schools. Districts are required to report incidents if…

Berkeley School Board Seven candidates are vying for three spots on the Berkeley School Board. They are three year terms. An eighth candidate, Liete M. What ever happened to School Boards being non-partisan? Every single current member of the Berkeley Township Board of Education is a registered Republican. That includes the four "appointed" members. Berkeley Dispatch

Current Central Regional Cuts Still Standing at $815,239

Board of Ed holding off on final decision until May 26 meeting

It's been almost a month since voters narrowly turned down the Central Regional school district's tax levy for the 2011-2012 budget by a margin of 106 votes. The aftermath of that vote has pitted one town against four others. Governing bodies in school districts with defeated budgets are mandated by state law to examine the budgets to decide if a blanket cut should be made. And that's part of the problem in the Central Regional school district, which accepts middle and high school students from five sending towns. The budget passed in Island Heights, Ocean Gate and Seaside Heights. It went down in Berkeley Township and Seaside Park. "If you want to pass a budget, you're at the mercy of the municipalities," schools Superintendent …

And hey.....the money that was GIVEN away...NOT VOTED on...with the board of health on the prior page here, would have covered this amount perfectly. Instead raises and renovations were allowed....and did we get to vote NO on it??????? No. Some religiously jewish building is renovated on MY dollar. This system stinks. WE have to cut 800,000 and the board of health spent it without anyone saying …   more ›

Central Regional Board of Ed Says No to Proposed Budget Cuts

Meeting scheduled with Ocean County schools superintendent on Monday

The Central Regional Board of Education has refused the proposed $815,233 in budget cuts suggested by the five towns in the sending district. The board also held off on sending the budget to the state Department of Education for review, a move schools Business Administrator/Board Secretary Kevin O'Shea has said might result in an even bigger cut. Board members last night asked O'Shea and schools Superintendent Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides to review the district's staffing and programs again for potential cuts. O'Shea and Parlapanides have scheduled a meeting with Ocean County schools Superintendent Thomas Dowd on Monday to discuss the district's options, O'Shea said. "By law, the Board of Education has 10 days to appeal, so they will …

The 2.5 cap is part of the problem under the current system. Salaries are locked in at this time so with teachers getting at least 4% this year in some districts and benefit costs going up there is not that much room for anything else. I guess the State would rather fund Charter Schools than assist PS's like Central. There is an interesting article in the Star-Ledger by Bob Braum. Several Bills …   more ›

Snowstorm prompts school closings

Heavy snow and wind conditions tonight

Central Regional High School and Central Regional Middle School and all Berkeley Township elementary schools will be closed on Jan. 27, due to inclement weather. All after-school activities in the Berkeley school district are also canceled, according to the district's web site.

Narrow referendum passage "total team effort" superintendent says

District should have no trouble finding bidders for various projects

Central Regional Schools Superintendent Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides and several board members hunkered down in the administration offices last night, waiting to see if voters would approve the $5.2 million referendum question. They peered at computer screens, watching the numbers from the Ocean County Clerk's Office live election results change for the better or worse every several minutes. "It was a roller coaster ride," Parlapanides said. "But it turned out well." It came down to the last three of the township's 44 voting districts. "We knew it was going to be close," he said. "We were down 100, then we were up 100. With three districts left, we were down by 20. We were in striking distance." In the end, voters in Central Regional's…

Central Regional referendum squeaks through by 18 votes

A total of 3,147 out of 35,828 eligible voters, or 8.78 percent went to the polls or sent in absentee ballots

Voters in the five sending districts approved the Central Regional school district's $5.2 million referendum by a mere 18 votes. The final tallies were 1,582 yes - 50.29% - to 1,564 no votes - 49.71%- according to live election results provided by the Ocean County Clerk's Office. Only 8.78% of the 35,828 eligible voters either went to the polls or cast absentee ballots. The narrow approval means the school district will be able to proceed with roof replacements in the oldest part of the high school, replace outdated single-pane windows, hook the high school campus up to city water, reconfigure the drop-off area and replace cracked parking lots and pavement. The district will also receive a substantial reimbursement from the state, since …

Indians' 3-point loss to Central in Christmas Classic

#7 Central 38, #10 Toms River South 35

In this low scoring defensive battle neither team could get anything going early on, as Central held a slim 14-10 halftime lead.   However in the second half both offenses would begin to pick it up as the two teams would more than double their total first half offensive output.  The game remained tight throughout as neither team could take control of the game.  The Central Eagles did take a 5 point lead with a minute to play as Joe Hardy added two to end with a Central and game high of 13 points.  The Toms River South Indians were able to get within 3 with 32.8 seconds to go as Elijah Dupree drove to the basket for two.  Toms River would get the ball back after the Eagles were unable to add to their lead at the free throw line.  In the …
