Never Forgotten - Central Regional Remembers Its Own

Now there are five plaques on the Fallen Heroes War Memorial at the high school

Editor's note: This very moving event took place the day before Hurricane Sandy struck. Its publication was unfortunately delayed in the storm's aftermath. Berkeley Patch regrets the delay. The skies were an ominous pewter and the winds were already blowing hard from the east as the Central Regional High School Fallen Heroes War Memorial dedication ceremony got underway on Oct. 27. Most of the several hundred who attended the poignant event could not imagine how Superstorm Sandy would devastate Bayville and the Jersey Shore in little more than 24 hours. Remembering Central Regional's Fallen Veterans

Five alumni have died in military service since the school opened in the mid-1950s

The district administration and Central Regional Alumni Association would like to pay homage to five former students who gave their lives while serving in the United States military with a memorial on school grounds. Sgt. John A. Lyons, 26, of Seaside Park and a 2003 Central Regional graduate, was the fifth former district student killed in military action in school history. Lyons died on Oct. 26, 2011. His death prompted district officials to plan a memorial to former students who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country. “There have been hundreds of Central Regional graduates who have bravely service our country in the military,’’ said Superintendent of Schools Triantafillos “Tom’’ Parlapanides. “Unfortunately, five …

Thanks for getting this info out but a little clairifcation. District officials did not prompt this memorial. The Central Regional Alumni Association has this project on back burner and once our beloved John Lyons was killed, we kicked into action with the help of the class of 2003.
