Longtime Central Regional Board Member Supports Shared Super With Berkeley

Denise Pavone-Wilson says move would be good for both school districts

He's got her vote. Central Regional Board of Education Vice-President Denise Pavone-Wilson said it makes educational and financial sense for Superintendent Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides to take over superintendent duties in the Berkeley Township school district. Pavone-Wilson - who has served on the Central Regional board for 18 years - made the remarks at a recent Central school board meeting. She said her personal feelings are "positive for sharing our superintendent." Pavone-Wilson added if Parlapanides were to serve as superintendent for both districts, there would be better “continuity in the curriculum.” Pavone-Wilson said she was dismayed when the Berkeley school board made cuts last year in the elementary school band and …

Politics In Berkeley School District 'Not Going To Go Away,' Consultant Says

Deadline to apply for Berkeley schools superintendent position is May 31

The people who attended the forum last night on the search for a new Berkeley Township schools superintendent let a consultant know exactly what they wanted. Someone involved in the community. Someone already known in town. Someone who could streamline curriculums in the elementary schools to make the transition to Central Regional Middle School and Central Regional High school a little easier. Someone who can bring in revenue. Someone non-political. And while his name was never mentioned, the man they described was sitting quietly in the audience - Central Regional Superintendent Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides. "We've had a very political community here for some time," one woman said. "It's time to put politics away. We've lost …

Berkeley School Board Hires Consultant For Superintendent Search

Process should take about six months, consultant says

Berkeley Board of Education members recently voted to hire an outside staffing firm to search for a new superintendent to take Joseph H. Vicari's place when his contract ends. Board members voted unanimously to approve a $6,500 contract with Richard Morasco's firm Leadership Advantage at the April 19 board meeting. “We don’t pick the superintendent, that is your job, but we do give you a quality pool of candidates,” Morasco told the board. Morasco served as a superintendent in Monroe Township for 19 years and was also an interim superintendent in Berkeley for a six-month period. Following the presentation, board member Sophia Gingrich made a motion to hire Leadership Advantage to lead the superintendent search. “We have other proposals but…

I don't know Ms. Lippencott but the advantage of having Dr P run the whole show is that we would then be a K-12 (K through 12th grade) and we would be able to standardize the curriculum and consolidate services thus making our whole school system stronger and more cost effective for Berkeley Township as a whole. I also trust that Dr P would hire someone based on what is best for the Berkely …   more ›

Central Regional School Officials Push For 2012 Budget Approval

Voters have not approved the tax levy portion of a Central Regional budget since 2001

Central Regional Superintendent Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides will be spending the next few months doing whatever he can to make sure the 2012 budget passes. “It used to be people said if a budget failed nothing changed. Well [after last year’s budget was defeated] we lost freshman sports, we lost new uniforms for athletics, we lost teachers. We need to get the budget passed or the cuts will be more severe,” said Parlapanides. Central Regional's 2011 budget went down by 106 votes. The defeat resulted in a series of angry meetings between Seaside Park and representatives of the other four sending towns. In the end, many Central board members voted "with disgust" to $850,000 in budget cuts. Parlapanides has a busy schedule to get the …

Again the ignorance of some people is astounding. You make statements that have nothing to do with fact. Dr. P has been the best thing that has happened to this school district. If you actually took the time to educate yourself with the facts instead of running your mouth saying ridiculous statements regarding taxes you obviously have not taken time to learn the facts about you might be surprised …   more ›

The Heart and Soul of Central Regional

Tom Parlapanides is on a mission to make his alma mater the best school in the state

I'll sleep when I'm dead. That's been Tom Parlapanides motto from the time he was a boy growing up in Seaside Park. And it still is for the peripatetic superintendent of the Central Regional School district. The 38-year-old Parlapanides doesn't tool around in a BMW or other high end car. He's still driving the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero he bought back in 2000. He has no time to buy a new car. "Maybe next year," he said during an interview in his office on the 98-acre Central Regional campus off Forest Hills Parkway. "I'm just too busy. You'are only as good as what have you done for me lately. You have to keep moving." Parlapanides' full first name is Triantafillos. But those who know him, which includes just about everybody in Bayville, call …

'Garnet and Gold' Alumni Gathering Kicks Off on Thanksgiving Before Football Game

Mini-reunions on tap at Central Regional High School for Thursday

Central Regional Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides is hoping Central Regional alumni will take part in the first "Garnet and Gold" gathering at the high school on Thursday morning. The event, sponsored by the Central Regional Foundation, will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the high school football field. Signs will be posted with each class  year, so alumni will be able to find their classmates, Parlapanides said. The graduating classes will be broken down in the following arrangement:  1956 – 1966, 1967 – 1977, 1978 – 1988, 1989 – 1999, 2000 – 2010, & 2011. "People get busy and sometimes reunions are not planned," said Parlapanides, a 1991 Central graudate who oversaw the 20th anniversary of his class this year. "This provides a …

Central Regional NJ Ask Math Test Scores Show Big Jump In Eighth Grade

Superintendent credits block studying in seventh grade

NJ Ask math test scores increased significantly in eighth grade at Central Regional Middle School, a jump administrators attribute to an intensive 'block' of math added to the curriculum. In addition to the block classes, the district has included such programs as after school tutoring and a Study Island diagnostic exam, Superintendent of Schools Triantafillos Parlapanides said. "Every seventh-grader gets 92 minutes of math," he said. Math test scores rose by over 15 percent compared to schools throughout the state with the same district factor group (DFG) or socioeconomic group. "That's where we want to go. It's a tremendous jump," said Parlapanides. "The block had something to do with these scores." Test results also placed Central …

Dr. P, 92 minutes of math in 8th grade is good....it should be followed though with in high school. Block scheduling is the way to go. the short algebra class is not as productive as is the longer full length class. block scheduling can be a nightmare for those who are not "students". But, there are at least 1/2 the students there that would greatly, greatly benefit from block scheduling. It …   more ›

Central Regional discusses ways to eliminate adult smoking at school events

Smokers who keep on puffing at athletic and other extra-curricular events will soon receive gentle reminders to stub their cigarettes out. The Central Regional Board of Education recently discussed the need to limit adult smoking on campus. Scott Alfano, a teacher at Central Regional High School, broached the subject at the Sept. 15 board meeting. “The problem is we tell kids smoking is bad and then they see parents smoking,” Alfano told the board. He said that puts Central Regional teachers in a difficult spot, since they are tempted to say something, but don't want to get into a verbal dispute with a parent. Board president Keith Buscio noted the no-smoking signs at Ocean County College are very prominent. Buscio said he thought a …

Sure you all complain about the smoking rules, and someone even has the nerve to crtiicize the working hours of teachers and thier salaries, but no one comments on the fact that a teacher voluntaily donates $4000 of her salary BACK TO THE SHOOL DISTRICT to help with clubs, tree-planting, etc. No one notice the GOOD STUFF! All you do is complain. I hope my kid gets that teacher one year!   more ›

Central Regional School Board Toughens Grade Policy for Athletics, Student Activities

'Failure is not an option at Central Regional,' Parlapanides says

If a Central Regional student can meet the challenge of learning lines for the school play, master an instrumental solo or run for a touchdown, they can also reach the academic standards necessary to maintain eligibility for those activities. That is the belief of the Central Regional Board of Education, which modified its academic standards and polices regarding extracurricular activities in time for the 2011-12 school year, which began yesterday. “We’ve raised the bar academically at Central Regional in many areas and extracurricular activities is a part of those changes,’’ said Central Regional Superintendent Triantafillos “Tom’’ Parlapanides. Under the revised policy, any extracurricular activity participant who fails one subject in a …

How about the destruction of school property penalty? When an athlete destroys school property and was WARNED to stop, but continued, he/she should DEFINITELY have been suspended and NOT even allowed to attend a game in or out of uniform. Central Regional Schools Make it Through Hurricane Unscathed, Super Says

New solar panels still intact

Hurricane Irene left billions of dollars of damage in her wake, however, none on the Central Regional campus. Superintendent of Schools Triantafillos “Tom’’ Parlapanides said Tuesday that except for some minor damage to “a couple of ceiling tiles’’ at the high school the district escaped the storm “pretty much unscathed.’’ “The kids need to show up Tuesday ready to learn because there is nothing that will keep us from opening on time,’’ Parlapanides said. “We made sure everything was buttoned up before the storm and we worked closely with the police department and the Department of Emergency Management in advance of the storm. We even began preparing our gymnasium for use as an evacuation center.’’ Parlapanides said some water entered the …
