Voluntary measure to comply with Ocean County Health Department probe, mayor says
Wind turbines on Averne Avenue in Ocean Gate will be shut off between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., pending a further Ocean County Health Department investigation, Mayor Paul J. Kennedy said. The health department notified borough officials on March 12 that a noise level recording done on site showed that noise levels violated acceptable decibel levels, said health department spokesperson Leslie Terjesen. "We're working closely with Ocean Gate officials on this," she said. Terjesen said the health department had received several complaints from residents about noise from the turbines during night hours. The acceptable residential decibel at night is 50, but the New Jersey Administrative Code requires that the dBA - the decible level audible to the…

Bayville couple's new restaurant a family business in more ways than one
In these shaky financial times, Vaughn and Elizabeth Larsen are taking a chance and pursuing a dream. The Bayville couple purchased the Ocean Gate House about six months ago, then began a rapid renovation of the landmark in this small town on the Toms River. "It was almost in disrepair when we bought it," Vaughn said. "We had our contractors lined up. Where you would need 90 days, we did it in six weeks." Today is the grand opening of Yolanda's River House, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Paul J. Kennedy, food and drink specials and live music. The inside of the restaurant at 401 Monmouth Avenue has been completely redone. Windows in the first floor dining room have been replaced with larger ones, making the area light…

65-year-old Frances King was walking her German Shepherd early Wednesday night when both struck by a car
Frances King often took her German Shepherd Zeba out for a walk near her Ocean Gate home, her daughter said. Wednesday night was no exception. King was walking along Ocean Gate Drive with her dog when both were struck by a car shortly before 6 p.m. Zeba was killed and King is in Community Medical Center on a ventilator, said her daughter Donna Howton, who lives in California. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Ocean Gate Police Chief Reece J. Fisher have not yet released details about the accident. Howton said her mother suffered broken ribs, a broken leg, was on a ventilator and may require more surgery. "The police called me about two hours after the accident," she said. King lived nearby the duck pond. She had raised Zeba as a …

Authorities released little information about accident last night
An unidentified pedestrian who was walking her dog along Ocean Gate Drive near the Jeffrey's Creek duck pond was struck by a vehicle early this evening. Detective Richard Fiocco, who was at the scene, declined to release any details of the accident, but said the woman was still alive as of 7:30 p.m. The accident was reported at 5:57 p.m. in the vicinity of 509 Ocean Gate Drive and the duck pond. Medivac helicopters were requested to be on standby, but MONOC 1 and Southstar both declined because of adverse weather conditions. It was raining at the time the accident occurred. Ocean Gate Drive is off Route 9 in Bayville. The speed limit for the relatively straight portion of the roadway is 40 miles per hour. But the road curves in Ocean Gate …

Superintendent credits block studying in seventh grade
NJ Ask math test scores increased significantly in eighth grade at Central Regional Middle School, a jump administrators attribute to an intensive 'block' of math added to the curriculum. In addition to the block classes, the district has included such programs as after school tutoring and a Study Island diagnostic exam, Superintendent of Schools Triantafillos Parlapanides said. "Every seventh-grader gets 92 minutes of math," he said. Math test scores rose by over 15 percent compared to schools throughout the state with the same district factor group (DFG) or socioeconomic group. "That's where we want to go. It's a tremendous jump," said Parlapanides. "The block had something to do with these scores." Test results also placed Central …

Narragansett Avenue in Ocean Gate also slated for improvements
A storm drain outfall in Ocean Gate, a culvert on Bayview Avenue in Berkeley, and one on Hilliard Boulevard in Manahawkin will be improved at a cost of $574,840, about $45,000 more than Ocean County officials expected to spend on the work, county Engineer Frank Scarantino said recently. Eagle Paving Inc. of South Toms River is scheduled to receive a contract in that amount when the county’s freeholders meet at 4 p.m. today. Scarantino said the storm drainage pipe on Narragansett Avenue in Ocean Gate will be extended, and improvements made to both culverts once the work is done. The freeholders are also expected to authorize advertising for bids for work on five other storm drainage outfall pipes that extend into Barnegat Bay. Three are in …

Here's some views from around town of some of the damage Irene left in her wake. Mayor Jason J. Varano and emergency management officials have said areas of South Seaside Park, Pelican Island, Glen Cove and Good Luck Point were hit the hardest by the storm. Al Stokely, who moved to Brennan Concourse in 1947, said he's seen two storms that were just as bad: in 1950 and in 1992. "In '92, the water was all the way to Bayview Avenue," Stokely, who now lives in Silver Ridge Park, said as he stood taking photos a couple of blocks east of Bayview. During the 1950 storm, "I remember my dad having to put on his waders and walk down to my grandfather's house -- he lived a couple of blocks down (closer to the bay) -- to take him provisions." Dave …

Child is staying with relatives at an undisclosed location, Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says
A toddler injured in a domestic dispute at an Ocean Gate Avenue home on Friday has been released from Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Deputy Chief Detective Michael Mohel said. The two-year-old suffered lacerations to its head and back during the incident, which were not life-threatening, Mohel said. Ocean Gate police and investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office responded to a 911 call from 410 Ocean Gate Avenue, Apt. 3 at 2:40 a.m, he said. "There will be no further information until possibly Monday," Mohel said. "It's an ongoing investigation." The child is staying with relatives at an undisclosed location, he said. Skizma - Not sure if you changed your mind recenlty, but I am just curious as to your post from March 15, 2012. Seems when you wrote this post you did not think windturbines being so close to homes was a good idea. At 6:16 am on Thursday, March 15, 2012 Skizma posted the following: This only makes you wonder - all the solar at CR HS - is that really worth it? With all these types of alternate …   more ›
