State Planning Commission Postpones Town Center Vote Again

New hearing slated for July, mayor says

Just when township officials thought they were at the finish line, the state Planning Commission again postponed a vote on the long-awaited Town Center plan. The public hearing for Phase 1 of the massive plan along the Route 9 corridor was slated for today in Trenton. Approval of the plan would have brought Berkeley closer to the redevelopment of the decaying Beachwood Shopping Center. But Planning Commission officials informed Amato that no action would be taken until the state budget was approved, the mayor said. "I understand," Amato said. "The state has to have a balanced budget by the end of the month. Obviously it's a priority." But Amato says the township already passed its "biggest hurdle" when the state Planning Implementation …

I think the town benefits somehow from being left this way or they would do like Red says. Knock it down and charge the owner if they wont do it. PERIOD. As for the road and seniors, the road would help reroute rt 9 traffic and seniors generate tax revenue with out filling schools. However they will add way too many cars to the already filled roads that cant handle what they already have. NO MORE…   more ›

Berkeley Gets Boost From Key Committee For Town Center Approval

Mayor hopeful state Planning Commission will approve Berkeley's massive redevelopment plan on June 20

  The end is in sight. If all goes well, state Planning Commission members will endorse the Berkeley's Town Center plan on June 20, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "We are now at the end of the road, really," Amato announced at the June 12 Township Council meeting. The township moved even closer to next week's approval today, when a key Planning Implementation Committee agreed to recommend the Town Center plan at the Commission's public hearing in Trenton next week, he said. "I will be in attendance on June 20 to provide public testimony," Amato said. "We are at the end of the line. We are on our way." 600-800 cars is not going to help any of us "shop in town." We can't move on Route 9 as it is so this promises no relief. We are a town in trouble. There is a huge recession being felt here and we can't support two small grocery stores so the notion that there is money here to be spent in retail space isn't sound.
