New Jersey Natural Gas Completes Pressurization in Seaside Park And South Seaside Park

Residents will have access to their homes today

Residents in both South Seaside Park and Seaside Park will be able to access their homes today, now that New Jersey Natural Gas has finished pressurizing the gas lines. "Another step closer," Berkeley Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "All went well. Now onto meter rebuilds, which should be done by Wednesday the latest, weather permitting." When the meter rebuilds are completed, natural gas will be reintroduced to the meter, the mayor has said. The gas will be shut off at the meter's shut-off valve and a tag attached to the valve. The tag will state "Before opening this valve, you must properly test and inspect the piping beyond the valve as well as any natural gas equipment.  You may also need to have approval by your local code official.  …

NJNG: Gas Restoration Progress Continues Despite Anomalies

About 65 percent of barrier island gas main replaced

New Jersey Natural Gas crews have replaced more than 65 percent of its primary gas main on the Barnegat Peninsula despite having found a few anomalies on side streets. "Following the removal of debris on three side streets, we identified additional anomalies on our main," said Renee Amellio, a company spokesperson. Going forward, NJNG will bypass side streets that suffered such extensive damage that they cannot be repaired prior to re-pressurization of the entire natural gas system on the barrier island from Bay Head to South Seaside Park. Repairs will then be completed on those streets and service will be restored manually. "This will allow us to re-pressurize the entire system and restore service to our customers in all towns most …

Hurricane Sandy

About Half of Barrier Island Gas Main Replaced

NJNG still on target for re-pressurization to begin Dec. 3

New Jersey Natural Gas has replaced 2,275 feet – 48 percent – of its damaged, 12 inch main on the Barnegat Peninsula between Bay Head and Seaside Park. "Our crews have completed the plugging and capping of all meters, and are retiring individual services where required," said company spokesman Michael Kinney. The company said Saturday it is still on target to begin repressurizing its main Dec. 3. Barring unforseen circumstances, the company said all homes deemed safe enough to have gas service restored will have service by the end of December. On the Ocean County mainland, NJNG said natural gas is now available to 10,351 customers' meters out of 17,250 that were affected by Sandy. Of those who have gas available, 4,536 have turned their …

NJNG 'Retires' 12 Miles of Gas Main on Barrier Island

Main was damaged when gas service was shut down

New Jersey Natural Gas has "retired" 12 miles of gas pipeline on the barrier island between Bay Head and Seaside Park, company officials said. Crews retired the damaged main in Mantoloking, as well as areas of targeted main in Normandy Beach, Chadwick Beach, Lavallette and Ortley Beach. "Main anomalies must be addressed before gas can be re-introduced into the system," the company said in a statement. The company said it expects to begin re-pressurizing its system at its regulator station south of the Mantoloking Bridge on Dec. 3. "Barring unforeseen conditions that may delay our work, we anticipate restoring natural gas service by the end of December to all of our customers whose homes have not sustained such major damage that we cannot …

NJNG: Workers Inspecting Barrier Island Gas Systems

LBI and Barnegat Peninsula had natural gas shut off Thursday

New Jersey Natural Gas technicians are now making on-the-ground inspections to the company's systems two days after valves were closed to two barrier islands. The inspections of gas lines in the communities of Long Beach Island and the Barnegat Peninsula from Bay Head south represent the first step in a "sequential process to restore service," the company said in a statement Saturday. "Each section of the pipeline must be rigorously evaluated to check for all damage, including breaks and water intrusion," the statement said. "Once this assessment is completed, a determination can be made as to whether some sections of the pipeline can be salvaged. Damaged sections will need to be rebuilt." The company shut off service to the two islands …

New Jersey Natural Gas Shutting Off Gas Intrastructure to LBI, Other Barrier Islands

Barriers islands south of Point Pleasant to Seaside Park will also be affected.

Amid reports of "major gas leaks," following Sandy, officials with New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) announced they are shutting off the natural gas infrastructure that serves Long Beach Island, as well as other hurricane-damaged barrier islands south of Point Pleasant Beach to Seaside Park. Approximately 28,000 customers will be impacted, officials said. Atlantic City Electric reported earlier today that electricity will be restored to LBI once the natural gas system is shut down.  “Our crews did everything we could to save the system,” Chief Operating Officer Kathleen T. Ellis said in a prepared statement.  “We were only able to gain access to some of the most damaged areas within the last 24 hours, and the devastation is nothing that could …

New Jersey Natural Gas Petitions BPU for Rate Cut

Average savings could reach $133 a year, company says

The cost to heat your home this coming winter just might cost less if a proposal by New Jersey Natural Gas is approved by a state agency. The Wall Township-based company on Wednesday asked state regulators to approve a nearly 10 percent rate cut, according to a release from the gas company. The utility says residential customers could save just more than $13 a month -- or $133 a year -- beginning Oct. 1,  if the Board of Public Utilities approves the plan. Company chairman and CEO Laurence Downes said in a release that the utility can lower its rates by 9.8 percent because of cost controls and natural gas purchasing strategies. "We are able to take advantage of our cost control and natural gas purchasing strategies, coupled with lower …

Conversion to Natural Gas Should Pare Energy Costs, Mayor Says

Move could save $30,000 a year once hook-up is completed

Ten years in the making. That's how long township officials have been trying to convert Town Hall and other municipal buildings from oil to natural gas. But ten years ago, the price wasn't right, Mayor Jason J. Varano said at the May 10 Township Council meeting. Ten years ago, the nearest natural gas line was located at Central Regional Middle School, 1.5 miles away from Town Hall. The cost to convert was too prohibitive at $500,000. Several years ago, after New Jersey Natural Gas had added service closer to the municipal building, the cost was reduced to $200,000, the mayor said. "We were still wondering if it was worth doing," Varano said. But New Jersey Natural Gas recently agreed to run the pipeline down Pinewald-Keswick Road and to …

Berkeley Boy Comes Out a Winner in Poster Contest

Emil Orbelyan beats out 300 students in New Jersey Natural Gas 'Conserve to Preserve' program

A Berkeley Township Elementary School student earned $1,000 for his school when he was recently chosen as a winner of a New Jersey Natural Gas poster contest. Emil Orbelyan beat out over 300 students from schools throughout NJNG’s service territory. Emil’s drawing shows a man turning off the lights when he leaves for work, with money flowing out of the electric meter and into his pocket.  The slogan reads, “Turn it off. It’ll pay $$$.” NJNG’s annual Conserve to Preserve Kids and Conservation poster contest was created in order to encourage students to think about ways to help protect the environment, according to a company spokesperson. Three winners were selected, one each from Monmouth, Morris and Ocean counties. “The students submitted …
