Letters to the Editor

One Woman's Opinion

Reader questions Holiday City at Berkeley politics

The following letter to the editor was submitted by Bernadette Whitmeyer, the editor of The Reporter, a publication that circulates in the senior communities in Berkeley Township. Whitmeyer is also President of the Social and Civic Association of Holiday City at Berkeley. MY RIGHTS UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA I remember that back in November 2012, our community of Holiday City Berkeley in Berkeley Township, voted according to our by-laws to elect new directors to take over and run our community. Bonnie Well said Bernadette! When the court ordered President of OUR association (aka Dictator) began the Shareholders Meeting 5/1/13, he started stomping back and forth in front of the stage. In a loud and gruff voice he told us which topics we were NOT to be discussed. He also told us there were township police present to remove anyone who was out of order. REALLY? We need to reclaim our rights…   more ›

No Bomb Found In Sweep Of Nursing Facility In Holiday City At Berkeley

All patients have been returned to Holiday Care Center on Plaza Drive, police say

No bombs were found in the Holiday Care Center in Holiday City, after the building was swept by K-9 bomb sniffing dogs from a number of area police departments, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. "Various townships and counties came to assist," he said. "They did a sweep of the building with negative results. Everybody was able to return to the building." A worker at the facility found a note this afternoon in an employee restroom in the building at 4 Plaza Drive, he said. "It simply said, 'There's a bomb in the building,' " Smith said. Police are continuing an investigation into the incident, he said. Come back to Berkeley Patch tomorrow for a follow-up story.

I doubt those with family members at HCC thought anyone's time and efforts were "wasted." Kudos to all emergency responders and staff for keeping everyone safe. Why someone would leave a note like this boggles the mind. The sick mind truly knows no limits.   more ›

Sue, negative much? How do you know he's not living with his parent(s) to take care of one or both of them? Maybe his significant other is 55 or older? Maybe he's just been through a divorce? Who knows... Why make such a snotty remark? There are many cultures (in America and all over the world) where multi-generational households are the "norm" and it doesn't mean anyone involved is a 'loser'. (…   more ›

Be Watchful, Be Wary, Stay Safe

Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele and Detective Sgt. James J. Smith Jr. offer crime prevention tips at Holiday City seminar

Be vigilant. But don't be a vigilante. That was some of the advice Detective Sgt. James J. Smith Jr. and Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele had for Holiday City at Berkeley residents during an informational session earlier this week that focused on senior citizen scams and crime. “You need to help us," Smith said during his hour-long presentation attended by about 40 residents. "We need to help you. The only way to do it is with strong communication.” Several residents in the senior communities have been victims of scams and burglaries recently. Don't fall for the scam police have dubbed "death's front door," where a criminal reads recent obituaries, then contacts the family and claims to represent a credit card company coming to collect the …

James J. Smith Jr. said. The caller, who lives in the Snug Harbor section of Toms River, wrote down the license plate number of the car and called Toms River police. The recovered items included a driver's license, credit cars and a passport that belonged to a woman who lives on St. Thomas Drive in Holiday City at Berkeley, Smith said. Toms River police notified the woman, who was at work, and the Berkeley Township police department. "They told her they had recovered some of her items," Smith said. When the woman …
