No One Injured in Early Morning Fire in Holiday City

Fire confined to garage and attic of Barbuda Drive home

No one was injured in a fire that broke out in a house at 77 Barbuda Drive home in Holiday City early this morning, Manitou Park Fire Chief Will Jubert said. "Everyone was out of the house when rescue companies arrived," he said. The blaze broke out in the garage of the one-story ranch around 12:24 a.m. and was confined to the garage and the attic, Jubert said. "It wasn't fully engulfed, it was a working fire in the garage," he said. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to knock the blaze down, Jubert said. The Pinewald Pioneer Fire Company, the Toms River Fire Department 2 and the Bayville Fire Company also responded, he said.

Tri-Boro EMT Coverage In Holiday City At Night Is 'Self-Sustaining,' Officials Say

Mayor, Township Council members dispel misconceptions about new program

Residents in the senior communities will not see a tax hike or pay more for EMT coverage under the township's new nighttime program. That was the message several officials had for a Pulaski Boulevard woman who questioned the recent switch from MONOC to a shared services agreement with Tri-Boro First Aid Squad at the Oct. 9 Township Council meeting. "We cannot afford to have our taxes go up," the woman said during the public portion of the meeting. "MONOC has been giving services for free." "Evidently you don't have all the facts," Township Council President James J. Byrnes said. "MONOC is a business," Township Councilman Thomas Grosse said. "Their thing is generating revenue. This is a self-sustaining program. Your taxes will not go up. …

Police Charge Toms River Man With Drunk Driving After Car Lands In Tree

Accident happened on Plaza Drive in Holiday City

A Toms River man is facing drunk driving charges and driving on a suspended license after a one-car accident on Plaza Drive in Holiday City recently, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. Patrolman John Houghkirk Jr. arrested Jeffrey Figlar, 45, on Sept. 26, shortly after the 7:23 p.m. accident occurred. Houghkirk responded to the scene after a resident called and said a red Ford Ranger had overturned in the roadway, Smith said. When Haughkirk arrived, he found the overturned vehicle partially suspended in a nearby tree, said Smith. "The rear was eight feet off the ground," he said. "It was determined he was intoxicated." Figlar - who apparently had lost control of the vehicle - was not injured in the accident. He was taken to Community …

New E.M.T. Coverage Debuts in Holiday City

Pilot program now in place, Township Council President Says

Emergency medical technicians from the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad started their first overnight shift based out of the Holiday City First Aid Squad's building on Jamaica Boulevard on Saturday, Township Council President James J. Byrnes said. "They are going to provide support from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.," Byrnes said. "They are able to do a shared service with us to get it going." The Tri-Boro EMTs will provide services temporarily, until the township hires their own, he said. "They are able to do a shared service with us, at no cost to the taxpayers," Byrnes said. "The EMT's will be local people. They are going to know the neighbors and the neighborhood. The service should be better." Township officials worked on a plan earlier this summer to …

Cause Of Fatal Holiday City Fire Ruled Accidental, Prosecutor's Office Says

70-year-old man died of smoke inhalation and burns

Authorities have identified the 70-year-old man who perished in an early morning fire in his Biabou Drive home and ruled the blaze accidental, Senior Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Michel A. Paulhus said today. An autopsy done by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Joseph A. Lasko died of smoke inhalation and burns after the fire broke out around 4 a.m. in his Holiday City home, said Paulhus. "It's an accidental fire, most likely caused by improper disposal of smoking materials," Paulhus said. Manitou Park Fire Department Chief Will Jubert said that his squad was dispatched to a home located at 35 Biabou Drive at 4:19 a.m., where they found a structural fire in progress. “There was heavy fire in the front of the…

Paid EMTs To Eventually Cover Senior Communities At Night

Age, illness, sour economy takes toll on First Aid Squads in Holiday City area

Township officials are working on a plan to supplement first aid coverage in the senior communities at night, as squad memberships continue to drop.  "We have a very serious problem," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said at the Aug. 14 Township Council meeting. "Response times in the senior communities at night are longer and longer. As the years go by, it becomes more difficult to get volunteers." Township Councilman Thomas Grosse said members of the public safety committee met recently with first aid squad representatives to discuss the "dwindling numbers" in squads in the senior communities. Age, illness, seniors who have to work, and an increase in required training hours from 140 hours to 195 hours have contributed to the problem, Grosse …
