Farewell To A Fireman: Bayville Says Goodbye To Greg DePaul

Hundreds attend wakes for founder of Pinewald Pioneer Fire Company, Berkeley HazMat team Wednesday night

The men and women of the Pinewald Pioneer Volunteer Fire Company lined up outside the Masterpeter Funeral Home in the December chill to say goodbye to a man who defined the word "volunteer." They came to say goodbye to Gregory A. DePaul, who founded the fire company back in 1976 and served as chief of the Berkeley Emergency Response Team for two decades. Current Chief George A. Dohn - DePaul's son-in-law - led the procession into the funeral home. The firefighters stood quietly in their dress blues, waiting their turns to pay their respects. Then two by two, they silently approached his casket, stood at attention, and gave a long, slow salute. At roughly 8 p.m., a scanner alarm went off. Funeral Services Announced For Gregory A. DePaul, Respected Fire Company And Haz-Mat Team Founder

Lifelong Berkeley Township resident will be buried in Bayville Cemetery

Greg DePaul made a lot of friends during his 61 years in Bayville. They will have a chance to say goodbye to him at his wakes on Wednesday and his funeral on Thursday. DePaul, a lifelong resident, died on Sunday at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River, of complications from lung cancer. He will be buried on Thursday in Bayville Cemetery, in the community he loved and served for so long. A viewing will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from  6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville. A special Fireman's Service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m., according to his obituary on Legacy.com DePaul's funeral will be held Thursday.
