Parkway Widening Reduces Natural Barrier for Local Residents

Office of Sen. James Holzapfel working to get answers from Turnpike Authority

Before Jerry Roselli put a 12 foot fence up along the back of his property on Todd Road in Toms River, he could not hear his wife call out to him while he was working in the backyard. In Brick, some residents have to hold family parties in their front yards. These are some of the issues homeowners are facing as the expansion of the Garden State Parkway continues. The project was said to increase shoulder width, remove obstructions, improve sight distance and reconstruct the roadway between mile markers 83 and 100 in both directions. “I literally now live on the parkway,” Margie McMahon of Parkway Drive in Brick said following a meeting with a representative from the office of Sen. James Holzapfel and Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg …

Accident happened at mile marker 74.7 northbound, State Police say

A man who was trying to help push a disabled car off the northbound lane of the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township died when a passing car struck and killed him early this evening, State Police said. Preliminary reports indicate the man was one of four who stopped to push the disabled car onto the shoulder of the roadway, Sgt. Adam Grossman said. "The person at the rear left of the vehicle was struck by a passing motor vehicle," he said. "Unfortunately it looks like a Good Samaritan...they are still trying to sort things out." The man - whose identify is being withheld for now - was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by the Lacey Township First Aid Squad. "He was pronounced dead at the hospital," Grossman said. …

Route 9 Lanes to Close Overnight for Parkway Deck Repairs

Closures expected through Oct. 26

Route 9 lane closures begin tonight for parkway deck repairs under mile 83. The bridge deck repairs over Routes 9 and 166 for Garden State Parkway mile 83 will shutter portions of the highway overnight starting Oct. 17. The lane closures are expected to continue through Oct. 26, according to the state Department of Transportation. Construction crews will close lanes of Route 9 and 166 in Toms River starting at 9 p.m. tonight. Both north and southbound traffic underneath the overpasses that make up Exit 83 will be affected. The undersides of the bridges need work, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and DOT will close lanes to make repairs, DOT spokesperson Timothy Greeley said. Attorney General: Troopers in High-Speed Luxury Car Escort Altered Plates

The troopers have been criminally charged in connection with the March 2012 incident.

Two New Jersey state troopers accused of leading a high-speed escort on the Garden State Parkway for a fleet of luxury cars have been criminally charged, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced. The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) received complaints regarding the March 2012 caravan to Atlantic City, and the troopers were subsequently suspended without pay in April. In a press conference in Trenton on Friday, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said the troopers who conducted the unauthorized escort "turned our highway into a virtual speedway." "What they did was absolutely wrong," he said. An investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice into the incident found that the troopers, Sgt. First Class Nadir Nassry, 47, and Trooper…

It seems that there are a number of cases of state troopers abusing their authority and position. Even prior to this, I have read of news of state troopers who have been issued suspension for falsification and tampering because they were escorting a high-speed caravan, etc. I became more aware of this I when I was searching for car parts news and car news over the internet. Why it caught my …   more ›

Awaiting details on morning accident

A Toms River woman, the sole occupant of a blue Hyundai Santa Fe that went off the roadway of the northbound Garden State Parkway Tuesday morning, died from her injuries, state police said. Claire Baier, 56, was declared deceased at the scene, police said. There were some witnesses to the accident, who told police the vehicle "slowly drifted off the roadway," said State Police Sgt. Your so-called "free-stretch" of the Parkway is south of the Toms River tolls and continues for a few miles (and then there's the one up in Union County). Moreover, it's not where the accident happened. Also, the free-stretch may not even be Parkway, it may be Route 9 or a Route 9-Parkway overlay, and its maintained by the NJDOT Where the accident happened is a part of the Parkway where the …   more ›

PHOTOS: Maps of Parkway Plans for Miles 83 to 100

New Jersey Turnpike Authority divides plans into three stretches, while Ocean County addresses exits 83 and 91

The public hearing yesterday on the lane and shoulder widening and upgrades to interchanges 91 and 83 of the Garden State Parkway allowed the public to view the project plans. Here are some of the maps on display at the event, which will impact many travelers from the Berkeley Township area. The Brick Civic Plaza displayed the project — which stretches from miles 83 to 100 on the parkway — in multiple map boards. The main initiative to the project is to widen the shoulders and lanes along these miles, which are all lanes in blue. Shoulders and right-of-ways that are used as part of the widening to 12 foot shoulders are along the roadways in gray. Reddened areas denote bridges that will be widened. In Ocean County, bridgework at Route 571, …

This is nice if we don't have to pay for it. Is this another way to steal, I mean allocate funds toward their pocket? And of course, inadvertently allowing the parkway tolls to go even higher? Forever? Remember these words; " Don't fix whats not broken! "   more ›

Local Legislators Call for South Jersey Representation on Tpk. Authority Board

State Sen. Connors to co-sponsor legislation that would require Garden State Parkway oversight board to include members from southern New Jersey counties

District 9 legislators are pushing for more South Jersey representation on the Turnpike Authority's board of commissioners, elected officials said during a Tuesday constituent meeting in Galloway Township. “We’re not getting due consideration in this region,” said Sen. Christopher Connors, who was joined by Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove at the "Meet the Legislators" night at Galloway's municipal complex. Members of Galloway Township Council and the township’s residents remain unhappy with the possibility of closing the entrance to Jimmie Leeds Road off the Garden State Parkway there, and have been particularly angry about the assertion by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which operates the roadway, that it “doesn’…
