What the first devestating week looked like from my Mantoloking Road vantage point
It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy hit and like many others, we still have no electricity at my house off Mantoloking Road. Our neighborhood is humming with the sound of generators, but I’ve been worried about the silent households ever since the temperatures dropped. In the past week, I (like you) have seen a lot, starting with a house strewn in the middle of Gale Road. A homeowner there said it washed across the bay and through the marsh onto his low lying street—a street that still reeked of diesel fuel on Thursday. Homeowners were shoveling thick, smelly muck from their driveways like it was snow that day. They thanked me for stopping and listening, even though that’s all I did. Neighbors are helping each other start to clean-up the effects of the storm.
With over 25,000 Berkeley Township residents still without power, many residents are coming together, assessing the damage and trying to regroup after Hurricane Sandy. “It’s like a war zone down here. There are boats and sea doo’s everywhere. There is a boat through a neighbor’s home,” said Larry Aliseo of Travelor's Way in Bayville. After staying with family in Toms River for two days he decided to check on his waterfront home. On Wednesday, he found flooding under the house, the pool and back yard drowning and their garage full of water. “The outside of our home is a disaster. Our entire yard is underwater and our garage is flooded, but thankfully the inside of our house is dry.” Now, he says there is nothing left to do but start …

Pictures from around the area as Hurricane Sandy approaches.
As Hurricane Sandy approaches Monday night, damage from the storm can already be seen in Ocean County. Trees, power lines and debris are starting to close roads all over the area. In the barrier islands, flooding has already started taking place. Power is out all over the area as well, in parts of Toms River, and from Vaughn Road to the Tunney and Mathis Bridges. The Barnegat Bay has started to swell, raising water levels in the area, including the Toms River. Check out our photo gallery from around Toms River, Silverton, the bayshore and Seaside.

Residents should be prepared for power outages of up to 10 days from the anticipated impact of Hurricane Sandy, according to a release from the parent company of JCP&L. FirstEnergy Corp, which owns the local utility company along with several others on the East Coast, said in a release that the oncoming storm could wreak havoc with the electrical system and residents should be prepared to be without power for more than a week. The company is securing outside utility crews, electrical contractor and tree trimmers to assist a beefed up response crew and support workers to help restore power as soon as possible throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to the release. “Depending on the severity of the storm's impact on the …
