Central Regional Board Of Ed Tables Vote On Uniforms, But With Caveat

Vote on proposal was 6 to 3

After more than two hours of heated discussion, the Central Regional Board of Education decided to table a controversial vote on school uniforms tonight. The board voted 6 to 3 to give school administrators more time to beef up the current dress code and warn parents and students the code must be strictly adhered to. If there are more than 50 individual violations between September and December of 2013, the uniform policy will go into effect in September 2014. Board members Robert J. Everett Jr., Nick Mackres and Tracy Mianulli voted against the motion. All three said they supported uniforms and thought the policy vote should have been taken tonight. Everett and Mackres hold the Berkeley seats on the board, Mianulli represents Seaside Park…

Elitist? You come out and attack me for having an opinion and somehow I'm the elitist? That's some backwards logic there, sonny. It's typical authoritarian nonsense. Pretend to be moderate while insulting and degrading your opponents. Don't like what I said? Fine, then speak out against what I said with your own arguments and reasons instead of attacking me personally. Again, instead of launching…   more ›

Board Of Education To Decide On Central Regional Uniforms Next Week

Move would enhance school security, increase academic focus and level socioeconomic differences, superintendent says

Central Regional students got their first look at samples of proposed school uniforms this week and will vote tomorrow whether to require them. "I think some of the kids that didn't like the uniforms originally were swayed by how good the shirts and pants looked," Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides said. The Central Regional Board of Education will decide on whether to adopt a uniform policy at the monthly board meeting on May 16, he said. "We are giving them a lot of choices," Parlapanides said. "Shirts are long and short sleeved in garnet, grey and black, pants, skirts and shorts are khaki or black, with a garnet sweater or sweatshirt. Shoes we are still deciding on, but it will be some type of black dress shoe." The students …

Verizon employees to help restore Boyd Elementary, which was damaged by Superstorm Sandy

More than 160 Verizon employees helping to  restore Seaside Heights' elementary school, which was battered by Superstorm Sandy.  Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School sustained flooding during the storm and the 230 students enrolled there have called Central Regional High School home since. Volunteers from Verizon will give their time Thursday to help repair the school during a program organized by Jersey Cares.  "Hurricane Sandy affected everyone in New Jersey in some way, and this project gives our employees a great chance to contribute their time and talents to getting Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School back into shape," said Jayne Mayer, director of employee engagement at the Verizon Foundation, in a statement.  The volunteers — newly-…

What's Your Take On Uniforms In The Central Regional School District?

Take our poll and let us know

Central Regional school district officials are looking into having all students in the high school, middle school and Seaside Heights elementary school wear uniforms. The Board of Education has set up a committee and input from both parents and students will be sought before a decision is made. Parents and students can vote at their respective portals on the district website until April 2. Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides has said the switch will keep the focus on academics, enhance school safety and remove economic pressure on parents. What do you think? Take the poll below!

School Uniforms At Central Regional?

School officials and Board of Education want input from parents and students

Would uniforms be a better fit for students in the Central Regional school district? School officials are considering switching to uniforms for students in both the high school, middle school and the Seaside Heights Elementary School, Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides said in a presentation to the Township Council last night. The move would take pressure off both students and parents and would enhance school security at the 98-acre campus off Forest Hills Parkway, Parlapanides said. "We are a 98-acre ranch...with lots of entrances," he told the council. "If everyone is in uniform, we know who everybody is." Switching to uniforms would put all students on an even basis and lessen the economic burden for parents," Parlapanides said…

Central Regional To Become A Satellite Campus For Georgian Court University

School district also expanding Humanities Academy in the fall for all high school grades

Call it "Georgian Court South." The Central Regional school district and Georgian Court University will partner in another venture by offering adult college classes at the Central Regional High School campus of Forest Hills Parkway. "The opportunity for our students and community will be tremendous," Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides said at the Feb. 28 Board of Education meeting. "It's a tremendous partnership. We are very excited about it." The classes will be held in the evenings in the math wing of the massive high school, which Parlapanides once described as "the largest ranch house in Ocean County." The joint venture will be similar to the Kean University-Ocean County College partnership at the Toms River campus, he said. The…

Sequestration Of Federal Funds Could Affect Central Regional School Budget This Year

Central could lose about $250,000 this year, business administrator says

The Central Regional school district could lose roughly $250,000 in federal funds if Congress fails to halt $85 billion in "sequestration" spending cuts by March 1. Central Regional received roughly $1 million in federal dollars to use in the general budget, Business Administrator Kevin O'Shea said. "We are being asked to expect a reduction of 25 percent of these funds, or about $250,000 for next year," he said. 'This is going to have ramifications for our budget for the next school year, when you consider that the two percent cap for us amounts to just over $544,000." The district currently receives about $500,000 to help offset special education costs and another $500,000 in No Child Left Behind funds, which helps to fund some basic …

Berkeley Board Of Ed President Defends Township Councilwoman's Stance On Shared Services

Plan would save money and enhance education, Fulcomer says

Township Councilwoman Fran Siddons sat through a barrage of criticism at the Jan. 28 council meeting from those who disagreed with her views on shared services between the two school districts in town. Speaker after speaker - mostly Berkeley Township Board of Education bus drivers who were afraid they would lose their jobs - hammered Siddons for her comments at a recent board meeting when she suggested combining administrative services for the Central Regional and Berkeley districts and merging the two bus fleets. Siddons later described the meeting as a "lynch mob." Tuesday night's council meeting was markedly different. Several speakers - including Berkeley Board of Education President James Fulcomer - defended her right to speak at the …
