Armed Police Officers Now On Duty In Berkeley Township School District

Money for officers comes from new paid pre-school program

Each of the four elementary schools in the Berkeley Township school district now has a police officer in uniform on duty during school hours, Schools Superintendent James D. Roselli said. The officers began last week, after the district entered into a shared services agreement with Berkeley Township and the Berkeley Township police department "...to provide a uniformed police presence in each of our schools," Roselli said in a Feb. 5 letter to parents posted on the district's website. The Berkeley Board of Education unanimously approved the arrangement at the Jan. 24 board meeting. The agreement was a result of the newly-created school safety council consisting of parents, staff, township police and fire personnel and the Board of …

Berkeley Dispatch

A Puzzling Night in Berkeley Township

The Jan. 28 Township Council meeting at times seemed like a Berkeley Board of Education meeting

Township Councilwoman Fran Siddons had no idea of the backlash she would face when she suggested at a recent Berkeley Board of Education meeting that the district share more services with Central Regional. That is, until she walked into the Township Council meeting room on Monday night and saw the left side filled with Berkeley bus drivers who were apparently afraid they would lose their jobs. That is, until she saw several Berkeley Board of Education members - including board Vice-President Sophia Gingrich and board member Steven Pellecchia - sitting in the audience. "I walked into a lynch mob," Siddons said Tuesday. "They took everything out of context. There was an agenda there last night and people in the audience knew it." Siddons …

Flood Waters Receding In Bayville After Early Morning Incident With School Bus

Water was several feet high in some storm-battered sections

No students were on a Central Regional school bus that became mired in flood waters and mud early this morning, Sgt. Ryan Roth said. The driver reported to police at 6:22 a.m. that the unoccupied bus became stuck on Eugene Furey Boulevard in Bayville, Roth said. "He called us because he thought the bus was going to tip over," said Roth. "It didn't tip over." The Bayville Fire Company responded and the bus was towed away, he said. "Nobody was injured on the bus," he said. "The waters have receded." The water was as high as four feet in some sections at one point , police said. A fast-moving storm dumped heavy rain and strong winds on coastal New Jersey during the early morning hours. The winds are expected to remain high into Saturday, …

Nervous Parents Ask For Police Presence In Berkeley Township Elementary Schools

Requests made at an often-emotional school safety meeting in the wake of Newtown, Connecticut massacre

It could happen here. Close to 200 concerned parents came to the Berkeley Township Elementary School Tuesday night looking for information on school security after the horrific shootings at a Connecticut elementary school last Friday. Several asked for increased police presence in all four elementary schools. "God forbid somebody gets in our schools," said Kelly Gross, a Central Regional High School teacher with a child who attends a Berkeley Township school. "We need trained professionals." "I can't be concerned about whether the school pays for it or the township," she said, and the audience applauded. "I'll be everywhere. I'm not going to stop. Everyone needs to get involved. We can't just show up when something bad happens. Let's not …

I agree with having retired police officers present as a deterrant. they're already trained, fingerprinted, backround checked. Obviously we can't have just anyone off the street. They've already served the public, and often have there own kids/grandkids going to school in this town. Teachers weren't trained to be armed guards, they are there to teach. We can't just eliminate every window, or home…   more ›

School Safety Meeting Slated For Tuesday Night At Berkeley Township Elementary School

School, township, police and fire officials all working together to ensure students' safety, superintendent says

Berkeley Township Schools Superintendent James D. Roselli's first hint that something was very wrong last Friday came when he received a text during a meeting. The text was from his brother and sister-in-law, who live in Newtown, Connecticut. It was a simple message. "The kids are okay," it read. Their children, fortunately, did not attend Sandy Hook School, but another school in the district. But Roselli soon learned the terrible news about the massacre at the school. story. "It was very shocking news," he said. "This society we live in, it's a very sad state of affairs." Roselli was at the Berkeley Township Elementary School at 7 a.m. this morning, for a meeting with Police Chief Karen T. DiMichele, the principals of the four elementary …

Berkeley, Central, Seaside Heights Students To Return To School Monday

Seaside Heights Elementary School will be housed at Central Regional, superintendent says

Students in the Berkeley Township and Central Regional school districts will get back to hitting the books on Monday, superintendents of both districts say. Seaside Heights students will be returning as well -- as many of them as the district is able to locate -- and they will be attending school at Central Regional High School. "We had a meeting with our teachers this morning and they will be contacting as many families as possible," said Triantafillos "Tom" Parlapanides, superintendent of the Central Regional and Seaside Heights Elementary School districts, told the Seaside Heights Borough Council and residents on Wednesday night. Parents whose children attend Hugh J. Boyd Elementary School students are being asked to drive their …

Rumors Of Child Luring Incident In Bayville Appear To Be Unfounded

Police have no reports of any activity

Although rumors of a recent child luring incident in Bayville have been swirling through town and on Facebook, the reports appear to be unfounded, according to police and school officials. Berkeley Township Schools Superintendent James D. Roselli said at last night's Board of Education meeting he had spoken to Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele about the rumors. "It's alleged that two young ladies were lured into a van here in Berkeley Township," Roselli said. "It's unsubstantiated. They could find no information on that." Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said yesterday that no one had reported any child luring incidents to the police, even though some people had discussed the topic on Facebook. Roselli made the remarks after discussing the …

2012 Municipal Budget 'Down To The Marrow,' Administrator Says

Several factors behind last-minute increase

The 2012 municipal budget was battered by several factors that led to an $864,000 increase last week, Township Administrator Frederick Ebenau said. "This budget is not down to the bone, it's down to the marrow," Ebenau said at the Sept. 25 council meeting. The Township Council in a split vote approved a budget amendment that calls for the amount to be raised by taxation to rise from $25,917,605 to $26,781,762, primarily because of circumstances beyond the administration's control, Ebenau said. That includes a drop in the township's tax collection rate, deferred school taxes, hefty leftover snow removal charges from 2011, retirement payouts, a record number of tax appeals and loss of revenue in the construction department, he said. The …
