Berkeley Suspends Recycling Collection

Public works personnel concentrating on storm debris removal, mayor says

Berkeley Township has suspended curbside collection of recyclables while cleanup from Hurricane Sandy continues. Mayor Carmen Amato said the amount of debris that needs to be removed from streets where residents suffered significant damage to their homes is so extensive that the town is focusing the efforts of the Public Works Department there. "We had removed 1,231 tons of debris as of Monday," Amato said at Tuesday night's Township Council meeting. "We're going to keep going until it's gone." Amato said the town has pulled in as many employees as possible in the cleanup. "We even have golf course employees helping," he said, "because nobody's thinking about playing golf right now." First Snow Of The Season

Public works director Steven J. Seiler unfazed by dusting

  He's glad it's not January 2011. Longtime Public Works Director Steven J. Seiler is happy the first snow of the season wasn't much more than a light dusting. "I do not like snow," Seiler said. "I'm 40 years in the business. When I retire, I'll like snow." The flakes that fell in the early morning hours coated streets throughout the township. Department workers sanded a small number of streets, but nothing else was needed, he said. "We're fine," he said. "It wasn't bad at all." But when the township does get hit with a snowstorm, public works is ready, Seiler said. This year he has two more tandemn dump trucks and several more pickup trucks to work with.
