From the Berkeley Township Police Department's Facebook page: The Berkeley Township Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of its program to achieve accreditation by verifying that it meets recognized professional best practices. Administered by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with best practice standards in five basic areas: the administrative function, the personnel function, the operations function, the investigative function, and the arrestee/detainee function. Coach Thomas Murphy charged with striking a juvenile umpire at a game Wednesday night
The Berkeley Little League coach arrested for striking a juvenile umpire has been suspended indefinitely until the league's board of directors can hold a formal hearing. "The Manager of the Major League Mets has been removed from his position, suspended indefinitely, and is banned from all Berkeley Little League functions until he appears before our executive board for a formal hearing," League President Robert J. Everett Jr. said late last night, after an emergency meeting. "We recognize that due to the legal ramifications of this incident, it may be some time before there is a final disposition of this issue," he said. One homeowner screamed as she saw man try to break sliding glass door
Berkeley police have arrested a South Toms River man in connection with several burglaries in a development off Hickory Lane, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. The incidents occurred between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 15, one at a home on Timberline Road, one on Tupelo Road and one on Amsterdam Avenue, he said. Walter Whited, 25, Baylor Street, South Toms River, was arrested at his home at 11 a.m. on April 17. He was charged with one count of possession of stolen property and numerous counts of burglary, Smith said. Police expect to file more charges, he said. Sliding glass doors in both homes broken
Berkeley police are looking a suspect or suspects who broke into a Morris Boulevard home yesterday and attempted to burglarize a Laurel Street home, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. Someone broke the sliding glass door in the Morris Avenue home with a stone from the yard. The master bedroom was ransacked, Smith said. "We believe they took some jewelry and some rings," he said. Someone also attempted to break into a Laurel Street home shortly before the Morris Boulevard incident by throwing a brick through sliding glass doors, Smith said. But the door didn't shatter enough to gain entry and the intruder fled, he said. The incidents took place between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Smith said. Berkeley Township schools notified, extra officers stationed in area around dismissal time
Berkeley police are interviewing residents who reported seeing a white male driving an SUV fire shots into the Barnegat Bay near Good Luck Point this afternoon, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. "We believe it to be an isolated incident," he said. "We are interviewing other people who confirmed they heard gunshots." Berkeley Township school district officials were notified of the incident as a precaution, since it occurred at 3:15 p.m., around dismissal time, Smith said. Police catch suspect as he was leaving the building with two bottles of beer, police chief says
Police have charged a Bayville man with burglary, theft and criminal mischief after they caught him coming out of the V.F.W. Post 9503 building early on Saint Patrick's Day, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said. Patrolman Robert Flanegan arrested Shawn Heyl, 32, Glenwood Drive, after he and a Lakewood police officer apprehended him after a brief foot chase at 6:35 a.m., the chief said. The Lakewood officer was in the area at the time of the incident and stopped to offer assistance, DiMichele said. "When he saw the officers, he took off on foot and began to run," DiMichele said. Robert N. Kovacs Jr. already lodged in Ocean County Jail in Toms River on other burglary charges
Police have charged a 22-year-old man whose last known address was in Holiday City with the burglary and theft of unoccupied homes in battered Good Luck Point and Glen Cove, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. Berkeley Township Detectives Joseph Robertazzi and Joseph Santoro on March 28 charged Robert N. Kovacs Jr. with the crimes after he admitted to breaking into the homes in the Bayville section of the township to steal jewelry, money, copper and other household items.. "All of the homes were temporarily unoccupied as a result of damages incurred during Superstorm Sandy," Smith said. Incident happened near Westbrook Drive and Mule Road
Police arrested a Howell Township man shortly after midnight on Jan. 17 and charged him with possession of marijuana and speeding, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said. Patrolman Al Foca stopped Michael Makofsky, 23, in the area of Westbrook Drive and Mule Road in Holiday City at 12:24 a.m., after he spotted him speeding. When Foca questioned Makofsky, he noticed the driver "seemed impaired," Smith said. Foca also found 13 clear, small plastic bags containing a greenish-brown substance in the car, Smith said. Makofsky was placed under arrest, processed at police headquarters and released, he said.

Accident happened on Dorsey Lane at 7:57 p.m., police said
A 48-year-old Bayville man was in critical condition early this morning, after his motorcycle collided with a Dodge Ram truck on Dorsey Drive early Tuesday evening, Patrolman John Houghkirk said. James McGee, Hancock Avenue, was traveling north on Dorsey Lane across from Central Regional High School when his 2006 Harley Davidson collided with a truck driven by Ralph Blumberg, 22, Dorsey Lane, Houghkirk said. McGee was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with critical injuries. Blumberg received minor injuries in the collision. Police find one woman with recyclable items, copper from home on Balsam Drive
Police have charged a Toms River woman with burglary and theft after they found her inside a Balsam Drive home taking items from the flood-damaged residence, Detective Sgt. James J. Smith. Patrolmen William Somers and Don Rowley, along with Detective Will Cullen, responded to the home at 1:30 p.m. today, after receiving a call from a neighbor that people were in the uninhabitable house removing items, Smith said. They charged Donna Yurko, 49, Lacombe Terrace, with burglary and theft.
