Central Regional School Board Slated To Vote On School Uniforms Tonight

Board of Education meeting gets underway at 7 p.m.

Central Regional High School students heading back to school next September have nixed wearing school uniforms, according to a poll taken on the district website. Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors voted 658 to 507 against the proposed uniforms. But parents in both the high school and middle school voted in favor of uniforms, with 212 yes votes and 185 no votes, according to Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides post on his Facebook page. The Central Regional Board of Education will vote on the issue at the board meeting tonight, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the board meeting room at the high school. Elitist? You come out and attack me for having an opinion and somehow I'm the elitist? That's some backwards logic there, sonny. It's typical authoritarian nonsense. Pretend to be moderate while insulting and degrading your opponents. Don't like what I said? Fine, then speak out against what I said with your own arguments and reasons instead of attacking me personally. Again, instead of launching…   more ›

Dune System At Island Beach State Park Didn't Cause Sandy Damage To Mainland, DEP Says

Island Beach will not be included in Army Corps of Engineers' dune and beach replenishment program

South Seaside Park resident Donald Whiteman's family has lived on the barrier island section of Berkeley Township for seven decades. And they know a washout from a storm when they see one, going all the way back to the Hurricane of 1938, he has said at more than one Berkeley Township Council meeting. Whiteman again urged township officials at the May 5 meeting to pressure the state Department of Environmental Protection to include Island Beach in the Army Corps of Engineers dune and beach replenishment program. "Residents in South Seaside Park who stayed during the storm recognized there was more than one breach," he said. "Island Beach had about five washouts." Whiteman was one of those who rode out the storm. He noticed problems at the …

Berkeley Township Taxpayers Coalition President Takes Commenters to Task

Samuel J. Cammarato responds

Editor's note: Samuel J. Cammarato is president of the nonprofit Berkeley Township Taxpayers Coalition. He is responding to comments made about him in a story that appeared on April 24. Many of the comments were removed, but Mr. Cammarato would like the opportunity to respond to them. On Wednesday April 24, accusations were written in the Berkeley Patch about me personally and the nonprofit which I am the president of, the Berkeley Township Taxpayers Coalition (BTTC). I was busy preparing for the Stop FEMA Now meeting at the Berkeley Township Elementary School to respond until now. My home like so many others in Glen Cove, was severely damaged due to Superstorm Sandy. I have not lived in my home since the storm. Even though my home has …

To be fair to Mr. Cammarato whom I have only met twice, he was at the very first meeting of StopFemaNow and certainly was interested in the needs and welfare of our entire Bayville community. I also ran into him at a local meeting after those nasty comments appeared about his being MIA when I seemed to keep bumping into him. I mentioned it to him and did thank him for his involvement because it …   more ›

Glimmer Of Hope: Two Redevelopers Interested In Beachwood Shopping Center

Lennar Corporation and M&M Realty want to take a closer look at Route 9 South eyesore at entrance to Berkeley Township

Just how contaminated is the Beachwood Shopping Center site and what would it cost to clean it up and redevelop the longtime eyesore? No one really knows the answers yet. But a representative of Lennar Corporation said the company wants to partner with M&M Realty to find out. "The township is in the process of looking to name a new redeveloper," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said at the May 6 Township Council meeting. Amato said he wants council members to meet within the next several days to decide whether to name the two firms the redevelopers of record for the dilapidated site. Once they are named, the companies can begin environmental studies to determine how much it would cost to remediate the site. "They will be able to make a …

I agree with some of the above. Definitely no big box stores. They ruin the area. Make it look like a main street, I think it's called a lifestyle center or something. They can make it look pretty with landscaping, fountains, have live music in the summer on the weekends. I was hopeful after that fire, that the whole thing burned to the ground. What are Central Regional's big plans? Sorry for the…   more ›

Berkeley resident Jason B. Walsh, a tier-three sex offender, indicted today

An Ocean County Grand Jury has indicted a Berkeley Township man listed as a sex offender for trying to join a band parent board position at Toms River High School East, OceanCounty Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said. Jason B. Walsh, 41, was indicted following an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office, the Toms River Police Department and the New Jersey Department of Parole, Coronato said. Walsh, a tier-three sex offender, "knowingly participated in and attempted to secure a band parent board position in the high school's Marching Band "pit crew," between Oct. 13 2012 and Nov. 23, 2012, said Coronato. That violates the New Jersey Sex Offender statutes, he said. "After being notified of the violation by school officials and parents, the …

No official notification has been sent to Band Parents from the BOE. This action directly affected students but the illicit tryst at Int East is all over the news. What is wrong with this school system? 6 months with no notification and not only were band members affected but potentially their siblings who attended meetings, practices, competitions and events.   more ›

One Woman's Opinion

Reader questions Holiday City at Berkeley politics

The following letter to the editor was submitted by Bernadette Whitmeyer, the editor of The Reporter, a publication that circulates in the senior communities in Berkeley Township. Whitmeyer is also President of the Social and Civic Association of Holiday City at Berkeley. MY RIGHTS UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA I remember that back in November 2012, our community of Holiday City Berkeley in Berkeley Township, voted according to our by-laws to elect new directors to take over and run our community. So what happened?  We all voted and there were five people who ran with only three positions open.  We had real voting machines, we even had absentee ballots.  But all this was done in vain.   We voted for the people …

Bonnie Well said Bernadette! When the court ordered President of OUR association (aka Dictator) began the Shareholders Meeting 5/1/13, he started stomping back and forth in front of the stage. In a loud and gruff voice he told us which topics we were NOT to be discussed. He also told us there were township police present to remove anyone who was out of order. REALLY? We need to reclaim our rights…   more ›

Incident happened Thursday night during game at Moorage Avenue complex, police say

Berkeley police have charged a Berkeley Little League coach with two counts of assault after he struck a 17-year-old juvenile umpire who ejected him from a game Thursday night, Detective Sgt. He was charged with simple assault and assault at a sporting event in the presence of children under 16 years old, Smith said. More Sections of Island Beach Reopened, Beach Access Boardwalk Repairs To Begin

Park now opened from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Island Beach State Park has returned to pre-Superstorm Sandy hours and more of the park has been opened to visitors, state Department of Environmental Protection Commission Bob Martin said. “We are keeping pace with the Christie Administration’s goal of having all of our state parks, including Island Beach State Park, fully operational for the peak summer season,” Martin said. “Having this popular destination getting closer to normal operations is emblematic of the state’s drive to have the Shore open for business this summer.’’ The park is now open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for all guests. Fishing access has also been extended to 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The DEP recently awarded a $268,000 contract to a New Brunswick-based Tekton Development Corp…
