Island Beach will not be included in Army Corps of Engineers' dune and beach replenishment program
South Seaside Park resident Donald Whiteman's family has lived on the barrier island section of Berkeley Township for seven decades. And they know a washout from a storm when they see one, going all the way back to the Hurricane of 1938, he has said at more than one Berkeley Township Council meeting. Whiteman again urged township officials at the May 5 meeting to pressure the state Department of Environmental Protection to include Island Beach in the Army Corps of Engineers dune and beach replenishment program. "Residents in South Seaside Park who stayed during the storm recognized there was more than one breach," he said. "Island Beach had about five washouts." Whiteman was one of those who rode out the storm. He noticed problems at the …

Samuel J. Cammarato responds
Editor's note: Samuel J. Cammarato is president of the nonprofit Berkeley Township Taxpayers Coalition. He is responding to comments made about him in a story that appeared on April 24. Many of the comments were removed, but Mr. Cammarato would like the opportunity to respond to them. On Wednesday April 24, accusations were written in the Berkeley Patch about me personally and the nonprofit which I am the president of, the Berkeley Township Taxpayers Coalition (BTTC). I was busy preparing for the Stop FEMA Now meeting at the Berkeley Township Elementary School to respond until now. My home like so many others in Glen Cove, was severely damaged due to Superstorm Sandy. I have not lived in my home since the storm. Even though my home has …
Lennar Corporation and M&M Realty want to take a closer look at Route 9 South eyesore at entrance to Berkeley Township
Just how contaminated is the Beachwood Shopping Center site and what would it cost to clean it up and redevelop the longtime eyesore? No one really knows the answers yet. But a representative of Lennar Corporation said the company wants to partner with M&M Realty to find out. "The township is in the process of looking to name a new redeveloper," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said at the May 6 Township Council meeting. Amato said he wants council members to meet within the next several days to decide whether to name the two firms the redevelopers of record for the dilapidated site. Once they are named, the companies can begin environmental studies to determine how much it would cost to remediate the site. "They will be able to make a …

MY RIGHTS UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA I remember that back in November 2012, our community of Holiday City Berkeley in Berkeley Township, voted according to our by-laws to elect new directors to take over and run our community. So what happened? We all voted and there were five people who ran with only three positions open. We had real voting machines, we even had absentee ballots. But all this was done in vain. We voted for the people …

Island Beach State Park has returned to pre-Superstorm Sandy hours and more of the park has been opened to visitors, state Department of Environmental Protection Commission Bob Martin said. “We are keeping pace with the Christie Administration’s goal of having all of our state parks, including Island Beach State Park, fully operational for the peak summer season,” Martin said. “Having this popular destination getting closer to normal operations is emblematic of the state’s drive to have the Shore open for business this summer.’’ The park is now open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for all guests. Elitist? You come out and attack me for having an opinion and somehow I'm the elitist? That's some backwards logic there, sonny. It's typical authoritarian nonsense. Pretend to be moderate while insulting and degrading your opponents. Don't like what I said? Fine, then speak out against what I said with your own arguments and reasons instead of attacking me personally. Again, instead of launching…   more ›
