School officials looking for zombies with the right stuff
Are you looking a little pale lately? Is the flesh dripping off your face? Thirsty for fresh blood and bodies? Then H & M Potter School Principal Jeffrey S. Zito wants you. Zito and his ghoulish administrative staff plan to hold auditions at the school on Oct. 19. They want to interview prospective zombies to see if they have the right stuff for the 2nd Annual Zombie Apocalypse at the school on Oct.26 and 27. "They have to really get into character," Zito said. "We are looking for someone who will take this very seriously." Zito, gym teacher Jason Miller and art teacher Joan Richie have been somewhat obsessed with the event for much of the year. Miller owns up to even thinking about it on his honeymoon this summer. And Richie, well, she'…

Fireworks cancelled, concert not completed, mayor says
The 22nd Annual Community Pride Day in Veterans Park got off to a good start, but was cut short as the skies grew more ominous on Saturday. "It was a good turnout overall," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "The final band, the 70s project, did a few songs and we ended up wrapping up early because of the impending storm." The event featured rides, children's games, face painting, food, arts and crafts, exhibits from local businesses and local talents, classic cars, and 50/50 raffles and performances by The 70s Project and The Edmund Brothers. The cost of the event was supported by sponsors and vendors. The memorial plaque dedication ceremony to honor the late Jim Mooney of Ocean Gate and the late Don Marshall, former president of the V.F.…

Storm did not live up to catastrophic expectations, but still packed a punch
The message from the mayor's office was stark and simple "Whereas it has become evident that all persons present should leave the jurisdiction..." read the Aug. 26, 2011 message sent by then-Berkeley Mayor Jason J. Varano and Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele. But the the notice didn't just include the usual ocean and bayfront areas in South Seaside Park and Pelican island. This time it included residents who lived in the mainland waterfront areas - "...all homes along the Cedar Creek, the Toms River and the bayfront shall evacuate the area." And in case residents didn't get the message, police officers cruised slowly down street after street that Friday night. Bayview Avenue, Harbor Inn Road, Neary Avenue, Cedar Beach, Sandpiper Beach, …

Several of those appointed lost in previous school board elections
Swearing in a new board member is getting to be a familiar routine at Berkeley Board of Education meetings this year. Gerard C. Reuter was the latest. He was sworn in at the Aug. 16 board meeting to replace former board member Dawn M. Parks. Parks resigned on May 25. She said in her resignation letter she was leaving because of the "lack of professionalism of the members of the Berkeley Township School Board and the mismanagement of Berkeley Township taxpayers funds in reference to the hiring of an interim superintendent. The nine-member board now has four members on the dais who were not elected. They include: • Reuter, 34, Scott Drive. Reuter lost a bid for a board seat in 2011, when he ran with Louis J. Tuminaro. He said during the …

Lacey portion of Barnegat Branch Trail set to go to design stage now
Funding to design the next phase of the Barnegat Branch Trail, which runs through Lacey and Berkeley, has been approved by the Ocean County Board of Freeholders. The funding ordinance, for $600,000, draws on funding the county has budgeted for this year, Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr. said. That piece, Phase V, covers 2.4 miles from Oyster Creek to Lacey Road. It is expected to be the most complex part of the trail because of multiple road crossings needed and because of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station. The trail, expected to be 15.6 miles long and run from South Toms River to Barnegat when all of the phases are completed, has been finished in some areas -- from Waretown to the trail's southern end in Barnegat, and a stretch …
