Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association event gets underway at noon., followed by a 2 p.m. picnic on Amherst Beach in Bayville
In the first few bleak months after Superstorm Sandy, Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association President Fred Bekiarian doubted the group could hold its annual Blessing of the Fleet on Memorial Day weekend. "I had so much on my plate with the storm," he said. "I said to the board 'Let's not do it this year.' " But he changed his mind later, at the urging of Township Council President James J. Byrnes, who lost his own home during the storm. "Especially this year, we need to have it," Bekiarian said today. "We need to have it for the people to come together." So the tent will go up on Amherst Beach on Friday morning. Township employees from the Parks and Recreation Department will help heft heavy picnic benches and tables onto the sand, …

Members of the Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association, township officials and public works employees spent Saturday on beautification project
Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association President Fred Bekiarian wanted to spruce up the entrance to this Bayville waterfront community close to Barnegat Bay. "All we had was a beaten-up bush and a tree," he said. So he turned to association member Ken Gerb and asked him to come up with a more nautical approach for the center island on Veeder Lane, which many consider the gateway to Berkeley Shores. "I said, 'Come up with an idea for the island,' " Bekiarian said during a break under sunny skies yesterday. He got one. "This is my thinking," Gerb said. "This is the gateway to Berkeley Shores. Berkeley Shores is a waterfront community. What better way to say waterfront than with a waterfront design?" Bekiarian, Gerb, Mayor Carmen F. …

Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association's annual event ends just before rain came
Mike Teichmann didn't like the looks of the darkening skies to the west as he steered the 38-foot "Live Wire" into position for the Berkeley Shores Homeowners Civic Association's annual Blessing of the Fleet. "Supposed to be some thunderstorms coming in," Teichmann said at 12:15 p.m. "That's not good." "Keep it coming, Berkeley Shores, let's close it up!" he bellowed to a parade of boats chugging out of the Amherst Beach inlet. Teichmann, 75, and his wife Barbara have done much of the behind-the-scenes work for the annual Blessing of the Fleet event, which includes a Memorial Day commemoration, boat parade and a picnic on the beach. Wally Everett's "Live Wire" was the lead boat today. Everett and Teichmann slowly motored out of the …

Township officials hope to do maintenance dredging on inlet before Memorial Day
It's the only way in and the only way out. For the hundreds of boaters who live in the Berkeley Shores section of the township, the Amherst Beach Inlet - also known as the Berkeley Shores Channel - is the watery portal to Barnegat Bay. The narrow channel historically has a tendency to shoal in as storms and shifting tides take their toll on Amherst Beach and nearby Allen Road beach. And 2012 is no exception. "They've been dredging it for the past 40 or 50 years," Township Engineer Alan B. Dittenhofer said during a recent inspection with Council President James J. Byrnes. "I lived here 25 years ago and they were dredging it then." Township officials hope to have maintenance dredging on the inlet done before the Memorial Day holiday. The …
