State Attorney General's Office Clears Beachwood Officer In High Velocity Shooting

Case is now considered closed, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford says

The state Attorney General's Office has concluded that Beachwood Sgt. Bruce Harris used justifiable force when he shot Mark Tanouye once in the chest on the night of July 19, in the parking lot of the High Velocity Sports Bar in Beachwood. "In a letter dated December 18, 2012, Stephen J. Taylor, the Director of the Division of Criminal Justice within the Office of the Attorney General, informed me that after their independent review of the investigation concurred with my determination that the use of deadly force was justified,” said Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said. Ford's investigation into the shooting previously concluded that Harris had acted properly. The matter was then sent to the state Attorney General's Office for …

The real shame is that it took so long for this matter to be resolved. This incident was pretty straight forward but this Officer was forced to wait this conclusion out for 6 months. As for some of the other lame comments, it's clear we have a division in our society. Those who support crime and those who confront it. I knew both of the men involved here. This matter came to it's proper …   more ›

Top Ten Berkeley Patch Stories Of 2012

Superstorm Sandy tops the list

Township Council President James J. Byrnes perhaps summed up 2012 the best recently. "I'm glad it's over," Byrnes said at the Dec. 27 council meeting, the governing body's last in a tumultuous year. We've culled what we feel are the top ten stories from 2012. What do you think? Tell us in the comments section below. • Berkeley Reeling From Hurricane Sandy Our biggest story of the year is a no-brainer. Hurricane Sandy, Superstorm Sandy, Frankenstorm - whatever you want to call it - pummeled the Jersey Shore and devastated sections of Berkeley. Good Luck Point, Glen Cove, Pelican Island, South Seaside Park and the Toms River Shores section were the hardest hit. Two months after Sandy, many residents have still not been able to return to …

Probe Into Fatal Shooting Outside High Velocity Sports Bar Still Ongoing

Toxicological test results on Mark Tanouye won't be available for next several weeks, Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says

Toxicological tests on a 52-year-old Beachwood man shot and killed by Beachwood Sgt. Bruce Harris on July 19 won't be back until at least after Labor Day, Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michel A. Paulus said. And there is no timetable for the completion of the investigation into the shooting, he said. Harris was in uniform in a marked police cruiser when he responded to a 10:50 p.m. call about a man "creating a disturbance" in the parking lot of the sports bar on Route 166, Paulhus has said. Harris got out of his patrol car and confronted Tanouye in the sports bar parking lot. Tanouye was carrying a .25 caliber handgun, Paulhus has said. "He ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon," Paulhus said. "The officer discharged his weapon …

Beachwood Officer Fired Only Once In Fatal Shooting Last Week

Investigation into shooting could take some time, authorities say

Longtime Beachwood Sgt. Bruce Harris fired one shot at Mark Tanouye late last Thursday night and only one shot. It struck him in the chest and killed him, Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michel A. Paulhus said today. There was no truth to the rumors that the 52-year-old Beachwood man had been shot in the face, he said. "One gunshot wound to the chest was proven to be fatal," Paulhus said. Tanouye died at the scene, in the parking lot of the High Velocity Bar and Grill on Route 166. Authorities say Harris drew his service weapon after Tanouye repeatedly refused commands to put his .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun down. Harris was placed on administrative leave, standard protocol in cases like this, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch …
