All donations raised by 32 teams will be turned over to the American Cancer Society
Roxanne Stephens doesn't mind staying up all night at the annual Berkeley-Lacey Relay for Life. She does it for her mother and her mother-in-law. Both lost their struggles with breast cancer within a year and a half of each other. "It's just one night a year," Stephens said. "Cancer doesn't sleep." The 2013 Relay for Life opens at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park in Bayville on Saturday. First on the agenda is a noon lunch for cancer survivors and their caregivers. The actual relay kicks off at 2 p.m. and continues until 6 a.m. on Sunday. Stephens' team - "We love Mom-Mom!" - has 25 members and has raised the most so far, with $8,301. Four months after Superstorm Sandy slammed into Ocean County, signs of devastation still very apparent
This is not going to be over soon. Superstorm Sandy has forever transformed the lives of those who were directly affected by it. There is no going back to life the way it was. And only those who are living this nightmare each day and night can understand the constant daily stress, fear and worry. Those who never had to leave their homes on that dark and terrifying day of Oct. 29, they cannot understand. Maybe they lost power for days and they were cold. Maybe some trees came down. And there are some who wonder why storm victims can't just get on with their lives and forget about Sandy. They do not and cannot understand. We can't forget. The old cliche "unless it happens to you" is particularly apt here. Sandy is not over for too many of us…

Flooding expected east of Bayview Avenue
Township officials are taking precautions as a coastal storm begins to lash Ocean County, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. "We do not anticipate any accumulation of snow, just driving wind and rain," Amato said. "However, as a precaution, all of our sanding and salting trucks are ready to go." Since Ocean County is under a coastal flood watch, Public Works employees have barricades on trucks, since flooding is expected east of Bayview Avenue in the Bayville section of the township, the mayor said. As of 4 p.m., Bayview Avenue was still clear of water, but the tidal marshes were filling up. High tide in the back bay areas is expected later this evening. "All of our normal public works functions are operating at 100 percent," the mayor said. "…

Bayville Fire Company firefighters weary after onslaught and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy
They started even before the storm. Some members of the Bayville Volunteer Fire Company had already been up for hours when the call for mutual aid came in from Ocean Gate. A fire broke out at the Ocean Gate Market on Monday morning. By the time it was out, nothing but the brick structure remained. Then three more fires on Wayne Street, on the border with Pine Beach. By the time a blaze broke out at the former Wicker Store at the dilapidated Beachwood Shopping Center last night, Hurricane Sandy was at its zenith. Heavy rains and even hail fell. "It felt like someone was shooting BBs," Fire Chief Kenneth Anderson said, as he sat slumped on a stool inside the firehouse. Firefighters had to lay hose across Route 9 at the Roy Rogers in Pine …

Members of the military walk 15 miles from Toms River To Ocean Gate to honor those lost, and those who served and still serve our country
They left the Toms River Armory early in the morning and headed out under ominous skies, into sweltering heat and humidity. They trudged through Huddy Park, then down onto Route 9 South, into Beachwood, Pine Beach, Bayville and Ocean Gate. It was tough going in camouflage and heavy combat boots. But that did not deter Sgt. First Class Theodore Berry - a full-time National Guard recruiter - and his fellow marchers on Saturday. "When we do these walks, it's not a recruiting event, it's a pride event," Berry said. The group walked to honor current past and future veterans and to raise awareness of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They eventually made their way to the Chelsea Civic Association beach on Shorewood Drive in Bayville, where local…
