Hundreds attend wakes for Army Sgt. John A. Lyons of Seaside Park today

"Stand down soldier Your mission is done The danger is over There's no need to run You were trained well To obey each demand So take this and heed This one final command Rest your body And rest your eyes As we weep the loss When a good soldier dies" — Poem inscribed on Sgt. John Lyons prayer card   Sgt. John A. Lyons, killed in Afghanistan in late October, received fitting tributes for a fallen soldier at his wake yesterday. A sea of American flags studded the grass in front of the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals on St. Catherine Boulevard. Uniformed firefighters from the Seaside Park Volunteer Fire Co. Friends Honor Fallen Soldier from Central Regional

Dozens pay respects as the body of Army Sgt. John Lyons is brought home to Seaside Park

They gathered along J Street — old friends, family friends, and those who simply knew of him — to pay their respects to a soldier who lost his life in the line of duty. Those friends remembered Army Sgt. John A. Lyons as a bright kid, the kind of guy who liked to read the dictionary ... and take notes on what he was reading. The kind of guy who made everyone smile and laugh. The kind of guy who'd ride down the street ... reading a book. "Remember him running down the beach in combat boots?" said Morrigan Devine, who attended Central Regional High School with Lyons. "He had the best smile ever," said Jennifer Padavano, another high school friend. "He brought such joy to everyone," said Meghan Jeffries.  Lyons, 26, a 2003 graduate of Central…

"We're showing a soldier some respect," Breitenbach said. Sgt. John A. Lyons — a 2003 Central Regional High School graduate — died on active duty in Ghazni Province. He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade in Fort Hood, Texas. Breitenbach and other officers will escort Lyons' hearse from the Dover Air Force base to the New Jersey border, where they will be met by New Jersey State Police. They will then drive in a procession to J Street in Seaside Park, where he lived. "It's a terrible thing, these kids going over…

U.S. Marine Cpl. Nicholas S. Ott died in Afghanistan earlier this month

The name of U.S. Marine Cpl. Nicholas S. Troops Appreciate Care Packages From Half a World Away

Republican Club of Berkeley Township still looking for donations

Little things can mean a lot. Especially if you are a US. Army medic stationed in Kuwait, or a member of the 101st Airborne Division's transportation unit in southern Afghanistan, where items people stateside take for granted don't come easy. Since late last year, the Berkeley Township Republican Club has been sending care packages to the 101st and the 3rd Army's 1197th Company, a logistics unit deployed at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. To say the goodies are appreciated would be an understatement. "My medics here went through the boxes like crazed hyenas," said First Lt. Tommy N. Vu, with the 329th Medical Company GA, in a letter to club trustee Lloyd Mullikin. "They all grabbed a little something and were very thankful for the personal hygiene …
