The grassroots organization has its sites set on national attention.
From its humble beginnings - a few concerned residents sitting around a table in a small sub shop in Toms River - Stop FEMA Now, the grassroots organization opposed to the federal agency’s flood maps, has grown and continues to attract crowds at meetings throughout the state. Now it’s time for the second phase. Prior to a meeting in Atlantic City to discuss flood maps with residents of yet another county, Stop FEMA Now founder George Kasimos said the causes continues to grow. More and more residents continue to discover that their homes are now listed in FEMA’s flood zones, he said, and now they’re looking for answers. During a Friday conference call discussing the National Flood Insurance Program, talk shifted to FEMA's flood maps and the potential for change in New Jersey.
The impetus behind releasing its advisory flood maps soon after Hurricane Sandy was simply to aid in the state's disaster recovery, a Federal Emergency Management Agency risk analyst said Friday, noting that they still remain subject to change prior to their official adoption into the National Flood Insurance Program. Discussion about the NFIP as well as the Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps was made during a FEMA conference call late Friday morning and seemed to conflict with Gov. Chris Christie's hurried effort to see the maps adopted as New Jersey's new standard. Move will help homeowners qualify for ICC grants and keep Berkeley in the National Flood Insurance Program
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's advisory flood maps are flawed and do not show the topography that would keep many waterfront homes out of the dreaded "V" zone, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "We disagree with the methodology," the mayor said at the March 11 Township Council meeting, shortly before council members voted to introduce an ordinance approving the guidelines. "The maps are flawed." FEMA did not take into account any of the "impediments" like dunes, houses, bulkheads and other structures that would break any wave action headed toward the mainland waterfront areas in Bayville, Amato said. The group hopes a new space will accommodate its large numbers.
After its last meeting was shut down by Toms River police due to overcrowding, the grassroots organization Stop FEMA Now has scheduled a new meeting date, this time in a location organizers hope can accommodate the group's growing numbers. The next Stop FEMA Now meeting is planned for Sat., March 9 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Silverton First Aid Squad at 86 Maine St. in Toms River. The venue, which is significantly larger than the group's previous meeting location, a sub shop in a strip mall, should be large enough to handle the anticipated crowd of more than 100 people. At a press conference in Seaside Heights, Gov. Chris Christie said the new flood maps will help the Jersey Shore rebuild better and stronger.
New Jersey will adopt the Federal Emergency Management's (FEMA) Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps, clearing the way for residents and business owners along the Jersey Shore to rebuild better and stronger, Gov. Chris Christie announced during a press conference in Seaside Heights Thursday afternoon. The move comes as residents along the shore wait to find out not if they'll have to raise their homes following Hurricane Sandy, but just how high. "If we wait, all we're doing is delaying New Jersey's recovery," Christie said, adding: "I think this is what we need to do to build a 21st century Jersey Shore." The advisory maps, or ABFE's, were released in December and recommend that residents in flood zones in 10 counties and 194 communities …
