Island Beach State Park
Shore Road, South Seaside Park, NJ 08752

Island Beach State Park is a rarity on the U.S. East Coast—a barrier island that has been protected fromMore commercial development. With 10 miles of sandy beaches, it is home to foxes, ospreys and other wildlife.

Originally inhabited by the Lenape tribe, the park location was eventually purchased by a partner of Andrew Carnegie. The state of New Jersey purchased the land and opened the park in 1959.

The park is a favorite for swimming, sunbathing and surf fishing.

Island Beach State Park finished near the top of Patch's 2012 Readers' Choice poll for Jersey Shore "staycation" spots."
