Disabled College Student Works to Improve Lives of Others With Technology

OCC second year student Nick Tyler to continue studying computer science after graduation this month

When Nick Tyler graduates from Ocean County College in Toms River, N.J. later this month, he'll do so with a dual mission in mind: continue his computer science studies at Kean University, then use his programming skills to make life easier for those with disabilities. For his efforts, Tyler has been chosen as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. Tyler, of Brick Township, N.J., relies on technology to help him navigate life on a daily basis to a much greater extent than most people. He was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which has resulted in his having limited control of his arms and legs, as well as his voice. "False and Ridiculous:" Lawyer Blasts Charges Against Sandra Brower

Former Wall schools administrator and Lacey superintendent accused of official misconduct, lying to police

The attorney for Lacey Superintendent Sandra Brower, a former Wall district administrator, said the charges Tuesday that she tried to hide a possible sex-abuse case are “false and ridiculous.’’ Edward C. Bertucio, of the Red Bank-based firm Hobbie Corrigan & Bertucio, said he has asked for the “earliest possible trial date in an effort to gain the immediate exoneration of Sandra Brower, to clear her name and seek her reinstatement in her current position.’’ Brower, 46, of Allenwood-Lakewood Road in Wall, was indicted Monday on charges of official misconduct, hindering and obstruction. She pleaded not guilty in Superior Court Monday afternoon. She is due in Superior Court Judge Francis J. Vernoia’s courtroom on June 10 for a status hearing…

Community Faces Future As Lacey Superintendent Charged With Hiding Wall Sex-Abuse Accusation

Sandra Brower, formerly an assistant superintendent in Wall, was indicted Monday morning in Monmouth County

The community came to grips Tuesday with the news that Lacey Schools Superintendent Sandra Brower faces charges that she failed to report a possible sex-abuse case while serving as a school administrator in Wall. Brower pleaded not guilty to the charges during an appearance Monday before Judge Francis J. Vernoia at the Monmouth County Courthouse in Freehold. No bail was set and Brower was released. She is scheduled to appear in court again on June 10 at 1:30 p.m. Lacey Mayor David Most said he respects Brower and the work she has done for the community. Lacey Township's schools superintendent was indicted Monday morning on charges she failed to immediately report a teacher's possible sexual assault of a 4-year-old special needs student while she was Wall Township's assistant superintendent, according to an indictment. Sandra Brower, 46, then lied to police and tried to cover up her inaction, according to the Monmouth County indictment. Brower, a Wall resident, is charged with second-degree official misconduct, third-degree hindering apprehension and fourth-degree obstruction, according to the indictment. Lacey Schools Superintendent Placed on Administrative Leave

Action took place at emergency Board of Education meeting Wednesday night

Lacey Schools Superintendent Sandra D. Brower has been placed on administrative leave with pay, Board of Education President Eric J. Schubiger said this afternoon. Board of Education members voted unanimously to remove Brower at an emergency meeting called last night, he said. "Due to a confidential personnel matter, I have no further comment at this time," Schubiger said. "The next few days there may be more details. That's all I can say right now because it's a personnel matter." Board members also voted unanimously to appoint Assistant Superintendent Vanessa Clark as acting superintendent, effective immediately "until further notice,"  he said. Man Charged With Impersonating Trooper, Committing Sex Crime In School

A Toms River man impersonated a police officer to enter a township school where he committed aggravated sexual contact on a teacher, an indictment charges.  Bruce A. Figular, 50, allegedly unlawfully entered a Toms River school during a regular school day through an open door, claiming he was a police officer, on or about Jan. 13, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. "He was challenged by a school employee and presented himself as an active duty New Jersey State Trooper," Della Fave said in a statement. "Once inside one of the classroom areas, he committed an act of aggravated sexual contact upon one of the teachers." Registration Open for OCC Fall and Summer Classes

Ocean County College has also partnered with New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey to offer an Introduction to the Teaching Profession 24-hour program

Ocean County College is now taking registration for summer and fall classes. For summer courses, those interested in attending college can register until Sunday, May 19 for the first five-week and ten-week session. Classes start Monday, May 20. Registration for the second five-week and six-week sessions goes until Tuesday, June 25. Classes start Monday, Aug. 5. Ocean County College is also taking registration for fall courses, which start Wednesday, Sept. 4 and run for 15 weeks. For some courses, students may be required to take the College Placement Test. New full-time students must complete orientation prior to registering. Students can register in-person Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays until 4 p.m. in the …

County Sees Growth in Gang Resistance Program

The entire seventh grade class of Lakewood Middle School and fifth grade students at the Walnut Street School in Toms River will soon graduate from the Gang Resistance Education and Training program

The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program continues to grow throughout the county, as the Office of the Ocean County Prosecutor partners with law enforcement departments to prevent gang recruitment, Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said. “Law enforcement must take proactive measures to prevent the spread of crime and violence,” he said. “The G.R.E.A.T. program does that for those we hold most precious — our children.” G.R.E.A.T. is a curriculum instructed by law enforcement officers to prevent delinquency, violence and gang membership.
