Fallen N.J. Officers Remembered at Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Two officers died in the line of duty over the past year in New Jersey

The two New Jersey law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty over the past year were remembered Tuesday as courageous men who served their state proudly. Millville Police Patrolman Christopher Reeves, killed July 8, 2012 when his patrol car was rammed by a driver fleeing authorities, and New Jersey State Police Detective Sgt. James G. Hoopes, who died of a heart attack during training, were added to the list of the 467 New Jersey officers who have died in the line of duty since 1854. An indictment in the Reeves case was handed up May 8, the South Jersey Times reported. The annual memorial service, held at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, includes a ceremonial roll call of fallen officers and a 21 gun salute. The West …

Dog Abuse Suspects Arraigned in Packed Brick Township Courtroom

Charge: Brick couple abused 'Sammy' the cocker spaniel; one suspect receives public defender in case

The Brick couple accused of animal cruelty after claiming they found a dog in a garbage bag by the side of the road in March will face a maximum of six months in jail if convicted, a judge said Monday afternoon. Keith E. Morgan and Shauna Ewing Morgan of Sawmill Road were arraigned Monday afternoon by Judge Robert M. LePore in Brick Township Municipal Court. The two are accused of animal cruelty, falsifying a police report and more in connection with abandoning their cocker spaniel, now known as Sammy, whose story had drawn followers across the country. “These are disorderly persons offenses,” LePore said, adding New Jersey law allows a maximum of a six-month jail sentence for charges arising from the same event. Bayville Man Stabbed Saturday in Seaside Heights Has Been Released; Suspect Still At Large

The stabbing followed an argument and took place just before midnight.

A suspect is still at large following a stabbing Saturday night, May 18, at Hemingway's Cafe. According to Seaside Heights Police Detective Steve Korman, the stabbing was the result of a verbal altercation between two customers at 11:41 p.m. The victim, identified as a 32-year-old male from Bayville, was stabbed in the lower left abdomen and was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He has since been treated and released. The suspect fled the scene following the stabbing, and Seaside Heights Police were still searching for him as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday. 10 Arrested, 140 Pounds of Marijuana Seized in Drug Raids

A two month-long investigation by a number of local law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrests of 10 people, plus the seizure of cars, cash and about 140 pounds of marijuana, authorities said. The culmination of "Operation Weed Whacker," which began in April and came to a close Tuesday, was announced Wednesday by Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato. A 76-year-old Manchester man who was found dead in his home on Monday suffered from multiple blunt force traumas to the head and face, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato announced Thursday morning, May 16. The death of Anthony “Tony” Verdicchio is being ruled a homicide. His body was discovered at his home in the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Park in Manchester, just off Route 37 westbound. His body was discovered by a friend from a group he meets with every day. The friend went looking for him when he didn’t show up on Monday. Verdicchio was last seen alive at church on Sunday. Robert Ebberup, the attorney who will represent Anthony Senatore, said that by arresting Senatore Monday night at dinner time, the office of Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor James P. McClain was engaging in "grandstanding," Nj.com reports. Authorities are investigating the murder of a 76-year-old man who was found dead at his home on Pine Acres Estates just off Route 37 West Monday, Ocean County Prosecutor Spokesman Al Della Fave said Tuesday afternoon, May 14. Anthony Verdicchio was discovered at 5:19 p.m. Monday night. He was last seen at church on Sunday, Della Fave said. A group that Verdicchio met with every day for coffee first noticed he was missing when he didn't show up on Monday. An acquaintance from the group went discovered him on the floor and not responding when he went to check up on him.
