Bayville First Aid Squad Welcomes Back Ladies Auxiliary

Meatball sub fundraiser slated for Tuesday

After a two-year absence, the members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bayville First Aid Squad are back.

And longtime squad member Pat Sperber and other squad members are glad to have them.

"The mess is over," said Sperber, a 34-year squad member who serves as liaison to the auxiliary. "We are back working together. Everyone that is on the squad is very content."

Sperber declined to discuss what lead to the auxiliary's expulsion two years ago, other than to describe it as a "power play" among some squad members.

Instead, she prefers to focus on the group's first fund-raiser since their return - their famous hot meatball subs.

Sperber stood in the kitchen of the squad building on Route 9, this afternoon, surrounded by 40 bags of meatballs and giant cans of Contadina tomato sauce.

She will be back at 7 a.m. tomorrow helping auxiliary members to prep for the sub sale, which will run from 10:30 a.m. to roughly 1 p.m.

"We will go through all of them," she said. "There won't be any left."

The subs -which cost $3.50 each - can be purchased and eaten at the squad building, picked up or delivered. Anyone who wants to place an early order should call 732-269-1313.

The auxiliary holds the event on a weekday so customers from local schools and businesses can take advantage of the sale, Sperber said.

"That's the only way we can hit all the businesses," she said.
