Kenny “Toes” Cranmer was an avid garvey racer until last year when he was thrown from his boat and sustained a paralyzing injury that has left him in a wheelchair.
While he wasn’t injured in an ECBRCNJ event, he was well known to its members who have rallied around a fellow racer and his family.
“We held a benefit and pig roast soon after it happened last year,” said Paul Hulse, one of the organizers. The funds raised then went to renovate a room in Cranmer’s home to make it handicap accessible, he added.
This year the plans are to turn the benefit Sunday into a day long affair with boat races in several classes starting at noon at the Barnegat Municipal Docks. Included on the race card will be the “Ride For Toes Freedom Race,” complete with the “Toes” Trophy for the winner.
Along with the races, those attending will have plenty to see and hear with Cat Country 107.3 and Magic 100.1 broadcasting from the site; a DJ; the Wicked Rides Car Club will be there; face painters; vendors; and food. Their will also be a Sambulance onsite to teach children about water safety.
Also there will be a booth set up to accept donations for Cranmer and his family.
Those participating in the motorcycle rally to Mott’s Creek in Galloway that will follow the races can register at the docks.
Cranmer had worked for the Southern Regional School District prior to the accident but is now confined to a wheelchair and has exhausted his health benefits.
“Toes is a big part of the racing family, now his bills are piling up and we are going to do whatever we can to help out,” said Hulse. “He is in good spirits and we expect him to be at the races,” he added.
Admission is free on Sunday to the races and events on the dock.
Those wishing to participate in the race should register their boats beginning at 10 a.m. The cost is $50 per boat.
Registration for the bike rally will begin at 2 p.m. The donation to ride is $30 and includes admission to the Pig Roast. The riders will take off at 4 p.m.
Those who do not have a motorcycle are welcome to follow the bikes in their cars or proceed to the roast on their own.
The pig roast will be at 200 East Motts Creek Rd, Galloway. Admission includes all food and drinks is $30.
"Motts Creek is donating all food, drinks and entertainment for the benefit. The have not asked us for anything, they are very happy to be able to do this for Kenny and his family. Thank you to Motts Creek for all your generosity," said Jeannine Fucci organizer for the pig roast.
