A Prelude To The Ocean County Fair

A lot of preparation goes on behind the scenes for the annual event held at Robert J. Miller Airpark in Berkeley Township

As soon as Saturday night's violent thunderstorms had swept through, O.J. "Chip" Meyer crossed his fingers and sped down Route 530 to see if the tents had held up through winds as high as 80 miles per hour.

"It was intense," Meyer, 42, said. "I was thinking I would come here and find the tents on the ground."

But the tents - anchored by metal beams sunk several feet into the ground at Robert J. Miller Airpark - held throughout the storms.

Sunday it was back to business to ready the clearing at Robert J. Miller Airpark for the Ocean County Fair, which kicks off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Workers etched furrows into the sand, laid electrical wires down and covered them. Trucks laden with carnival rides parked side by side. Ocean County Parks and Recreation employees had already trucked in bleachers for the various shows. Food vendors were expected to arrive today.

The Ocean County Fair has been a Meyer family tradition for more than 30 years. Chip's father - the legendary O.J. Meyer - choreographed the annual event up until last year, when he was too ill to continue.

But his wife Kitty, son Chip and other family members soldier on.

"I've been doing it since I was five years old," Meyer said. "I started in 4-H with rabbits and moved up from there. I took it over so my kids could enjoy it. I know I enjoyed it as a kid."

The fair is always held the first week after the Fourth of July, so it doesn't conflict with any other county fairs going on during the month, he said.

The event will feature a variety of programs - Ocean County 4-H animals, two open horse shows, craft demonstrations, children's games and rides, pig races, music and a county fair staple - funnel cakes.

The popular country band "After the Reign" is slated for a three-hour show. The Zuzu African Acrobats from Mombasa, Kenya, who have performed on America's Got Talent and at Disneyworld, will also be on hand.

Tickets for the non-profit event are $6 for anyone 10 and up. Children under 10 are admitted free.

"We're a non-profit," Meyer said. "What we make we put into next year's fair."

The event is sponsored in part by Magic100.1, WRAT 95.9 and a grant from the Ocean County Board of Freeholders.

Berkeley Patch will post each day's events for the length of the fair. The fair will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Fair visitors can purchase "pay one price" tickets for $20 for Tuesday and Wednesday. They can also purchase a "megapass" for $40, for rides the entire five days of the fair.

It would be nice if you didn't have to press #1 for English, but is not going to happen. Let's just hope they keep the rif rag & gang bangers out. One would hope the County has a Law Enforcement presence at the Fair. Think the Sheriff will show? Not, but his over the hill challenger will. Where is a cop's cop when we need him. You listening MM or GG?

If it sucks, you can always go flying and see the land before the tidal waves come on December 21. Only joking, the sun will get us first!

jennyp... its good family fun. Yes it does attract alot of different people. But think about it, they have to have the bucks to spend because its not a cheap night if you are going to pay 6 bucks a piece to get in and then feed the family, go on the rides and play the wheels. 25 years we have been going... use to love to sit and listen to the 50's group that they use to have. We brought our kids and their friends and now we are bringing our grandkids.... Good family fun.

Thanks to the Meyer family for keeping this going. Hoping to bring the grandkids on Saturday. Also they have alot of booths with good information and handouts. If you like roasted peanuts, you must pick up a warm bag on your way out to bring home. They are very good.

thats right barbara, thanks to the Meyer family.
And we did just that last nite... on our way out, we got a bag of warm peanuts to eat on the way home ! Yum!

I'm glad you are home. We are still repairing in LBI but, hopefully, we will back by the 4th ofRead More July. This was not our "primary" home but it still was our home. We will never forget Oct. 29, 2012.

This has been one heck of a learning experience and yes, it has exhausted so many of us. The onlyRead More way to keep going really is to take it one day at a time and know if you wake up tomorrow something you never dreamed of is bound to happen.

all three siddons lost. Kukla Fran and Ollie... you ran for revenge and not for the people. itRead More showed and you lost.
Brian Wilson June 6, 2013 at 02:12 pm
Quit whining, Fran. You were always just in it for yourself. You wanted to be "CouncilwomanRead More Fran Siddons." Most people saw right through you. You biggest mistake was believing your inflated sense of self.
Terry LiCausi June 7, 2013 at 02:43 pm
Why couldn't you just write a classy speech, you chose to look like a sore loser once again. YouRead More listed reasons for losing and you and I both, know you tried to talk to the board workers and the Republican Challenger had to ask you to stop. You stood right outside the doors and tried to talk to voters also, you did this at all the polling places. You had 3 challengers to 1 republican challenger at the polls, so how could all that you say get done. Why didn't they call the election board? Come on Fran, just admit the people DO REMEMBER and that is why you lost.
