Voters Split Tickets In Berkeley Board Of Ed Race

Competing slates of candidates each took two seats

Voters here ousted three of the four current appointed members members in the race for the four seats on the Berkeley Township Board of Education.board.

John MacMoyle, David M. Ytreboe and Gerard C. Reuter - all appointed to seats earlier this year - lost bids for their first terms.

Louis J. Tuminaro was the top vote-getter, with 6,485 votes, or 22.34 percent, according to figures provided by the Ocean County Clerk's Office last night. Tuminaro was the only member of his slate to win a seat on the board.

Newcomers Patrick Mooney and Keith Fisher won their first full terms on the board. Mooney received 6,314 votes, or 21.75 percent; Fisher received 5,517 votes, or 19.01 percent.

Lauren Ciccone-Zawada ousted Gerard C. Reuter in the race for the one-year unexpired term. Ciccone-Zawada received 4,927 votes, or 56.39 percent, compared to 3,798 votes, or 43.47 percent for Reuter.

George A. Kaminski Jr. and Donnie Clyburn received 2,582 votes and 1,591 votes, respectively.

When will Berkeley voters learn to vote beyond the top three choices? That's why the ticket was split because the top three on the ballot won.

and they just happened to be 3 out of 4 appointed members ? i dont think so
jim tice November 07, 2012 at 05:49 PM
its a shame donny clyburn did not get in. great guy with great family and loves young people.big loss for school system.
Maria November 07, 2012 at 06:58 PM
If peoples' loyalty to the team was honorable then the whole team would have won. Having 3 out of 4 win shows that there are people who are two faced and who voted for someone on the other team. Harry, I would say that you should be shaking in your boots since there are disloyal people around you who voted in someone from the other team of candidates....how ironic!!!!
Christine Dwight November 07, 2012 at 07:12 PM
I think you're all wrong and people just went in and hit 1,2,3. I think there are alot of people that do care about the schools and vote accordingly but most don't know or care.
Maria November 07, 2012 at 07:31 PM
Harry, it's rude, obnoxious people like you who always prove their ignorance by making derogatory comments. I DON'T need to say anything, you just showed what kind of person you really are and I DON'T attempt to communicate with people who just don't get it. Fact remains, the ENTIRE Ignite Change Team was not supported by the voters and Mr. Tuminaro now has his elected seat!
JimmyD November 08, 2012 at 12:52 AM
It is clear that the children of Berkeley lost during this election. "Harry Balzach" stated that he is a member of the Ignite team that won 3 out of the 4 seats. I realize the inappropriateness of your screen name and truly wonder about your judgement and/or stability. As a parent, I am truly concerned with the direction of this "ignite change" group. I am very pleased with my child's education, the teacher and administration's professionalism, and the board's decision making. The election was truly decided by an apathetic and uninformed group of voters. The strongest candidate of this team was Mr. Kasminski and he lost handily by three individuals that do not have anything close to his credentials. I do hope that this "ignite change" group is not as ridiculous as "Harry Balzachs". Any educated person would realize this was a 123 vote.
Patrick Mooney November 08, 2012 at 03:19 AM
I would like to clear something up, Harry is not a member of the Ignite Change team. We have no need to hide behind fake names. Maria, what Harry said was rude and uncalled for and I'm glad The Patch removed those comments. Jimmy I respectfully disagree with your statement that the kids of Berkeley lost during this election. The 3 members of the Ignite Change team will work hard for the children of this school district just as we have stated during our campaign. It is a true shame that our team mate George will not be with us this year, but he continues to support us and we will be ready to support him with his future endeavors in the township. Finally I would like to say a big thank you to all of our supporters out there, you're the best.

I find it interesting that people make statements about how others vote when they haven't a clue. For you information I am capable and did look past the first three names on the ballot. I, like many others actually voted based on many things. One of the main things I looked at is how bad I felt the current board was. I voted for those that I felt couldn't be any worse. I say that because the people that were on the board were worse than I could have ever imagined . I hope the people that got on will take this as a message that we do care about what happens on our school boards and will be watching. I hope that they take their jobs seriously and keep the children as well as the tax payers in mind. Because that is truly what they are supposed to be doing.I don't go by what they say in the campaign fliers or whatever they put out because everyone puts out what they think will get people to vote for them. The test will be in the performance. The message to all of the elected officials should be, we are paying attention. You can and will be booted out if we are not happy with your job performance. I am just shocked it doesn't happen more often. I don't know the new people very well and I hope they take this importunity to improve the mess that the current board has created. In my opinion the current board should be embarrassed at their behavior and performance ,however I find people that behave they way have really don't care about anything except their own agenda.

Personally, I did not hit 1,2 and 3 on the ballot as was stated above. I voted for a change because I did not like the way the current BOE was handling things, and the fact that they were "appointed" instead of elected. And, specifically, because of whom did the appointing. I do follow what is going on in my town, and voted accordingly. I agree with Herme regarding the comment about how/why people voted, and find it amusing that "Maria" can make a statement like that.
JimmyD November 08, 2012 at 12:15 PM
I voted based on their resumes and professionalism. I didn't vote for one group but voted for the best individuals based on their listed qualifications. Unfortunately, that was not the top of the ballot. Hearme, how do you explain Mr. Mooney or Mr. Fisher getting double the votes then Mr. Kasminski? Were they liked more then him or stronger candidates? No, they were 1 and 3. Again it was a loss for our kids.
JimmyD November 08, 2012 at 12:24 PM
The board appointed the members to fill vacancies on the board. They finished the term and ran in the general election for a new term. Why is that so controversial "Bayville40"? Hearme how do you explain Mr. Tuminaro getting the most votes even though he was appointed and according to you made terrible decisions? The election was decided as soon as ballot positions were assigned.

jimmy D what are the lottery numbers for tonight pick 6 ? you seem to know everything without evidendce do you agree with the descision of the board to hire a super at $158.00 instead of hireing Dr P for free ? maybe thats why they got booted out and credentials dont mean crap when compared to your track record and theres was poor or like the other comment embaressing
George Kaminski November 08, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Jimmy, thank you very much for the support. I do, however, disagree with you about my teammates. Patrick Mooney, Keith Fisher and Lauren Ciccone-Zawada are all going to be wonderful in their new positions as School Board Members. They all have wonderful values and are in this for the kids. They each bring to the table qualities that they will be able to utilize to provide the best possible opportunities to the children, teachers and taxpayers of Berkeley Township. Our solid goals as a team will be executed as we are all going to remain in support of one another. I intend to give them my full support going forward. I also intend to continue my efforts to bring alternative funding to the district in order to provide opportunities to our children without burdening the taxpayers further. With that, I also know that they will be offering their support to me in my DEFINITE future campaign endeavors.
George Kaminski November 08, 2012 at 03:44 PM
It is unfortunate that there are absolutely some (not all) people who were not informed or aware about the differences between the candidates for School Board and, in turn, voted 1,2,3. Mr. Tuminaro is fortunate enough to be employed in a night time shift position and was able to get his name and face out there during the day in addition to being number two on the ballot. He was also fortunate enough, so to speak, to be backed by a large political party and funding was not an issue for advertising and campaigning. I do hope he does well and works well with the new members. I am extremely proud of the Ignite Change team which is made up of four parents/taxpayers who wanted to make a difference and did all of our bidding and campaigning ourselves. We will make a difference!
JimmyD November 08, 2012 at 03:57 PM
Dr. P was not the answer for the district. Dr. Roselli was the correct answer. I love reading your poorly written and grammatically incorrect response. Again, please explain why Mr. Tuminaro was elected if he had a poor track record and was embarrasing. (not embaressing)
JimmyD November 08, 2012 at 04:01 PM
My above comment was not written in reference to your response Mr. Kaminski. It was in reference to Mrs. Parks. (the voice of reason)
voice of reason November 08, 2012 at 09:58 PM
Not Dawn Parks as for your other comments they speak for themselves and my grammer is bad yes but you got my drift and thats all that matters
Dawn Parks November 09, 2012 at 08:01 PM
JimmyD, I speak for myself. I don't hide behind screen names, like other board or council members do. If you have ever been on the patch before you will see I have always awnswered under my own name. Thank You, Dawn Parks
