Mold Problem At Berkeley Township Elementary School Taken Care Of, School Board President Says

Update on issue slated for 7 p.m. at BTES on Tuesday, Pellecchia says

A minor mold problem found at the Berkeley Township Elementary School has been remediated and the school will open on Sept. 6, Berkeley Board of Education President Steven Pellecchia said today.

"The mold situation was practically non-existent," Pellecchia said. "It was so miniscule it was taken care of. As of now there is no mold at all."

Parents with any concerns may attend a meeting at the school at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for an update, he said.

"I wish they would come to the meeting, so they can put their minds at ease," Pellecchia said.

Schools Superintendent James D. Roselli said last Wednesday that environmental testing was being done at the school to determine if there as a problem.

"We have a company doing the testing," he said last week. "I'll know by Thursday. It could be nothing. We really don't know what it is at this point."

said last week he had "heard a rumor" the school was closed to staff members and contacted Roselli's secretary. He was told there was a meeting about the matter at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, but because of the short notice, he couldn't attend.

Roselli has said all Board of Education members were contacted by his secretary about the matter.

The decision to test was made because of the "extreme heat and humidity" over the summer, Roselli said last week.  "It's just routine testing of all the buildings."

The Berkeley Township Elementary School - located at 10 Emory Avenue in Bayville - opened in 2004. It's the newest elementary school in the four-school Berkeley Township school district.

"There is absolutely nothing to worry about," Pellecchia said today. "Dr. Roselli is on top of this."
