Berkeley Board of Ed Hires Former Longtime Lacey Super To Mentor Roselli

Richard Starodub will work with new superintendent James Roselli during the school year

Students in Berkeley Township won't be the only ones heading back to school in September.

Superintendent will be mentored by former longtime Lacey Township school superintendent Richard P. Starodub throughout the school year.

The Board of Education voted unanimously at the Aug. 16 board meeting to pay Starodub $2,500 for the service.

"He and I will work throughout the year together," said at the meeting. "I have to comply with a state mandate."

Starodub retired from the Lacey school district last Oct. 31, after 21 years in the district.

The state mandate also includes continuing education requirements, according to the board agenda.

Roselli was approved by a unanimous vote of the Berkeley Township Board of Education, at a special meeting of the board. He will be paid $148,000 yearly over the course of a five-year contract, the board announced.

His name was one of six presented to the board by , the outside firm the board hired for $6,500 to conduct the search. Roselli received his doctoral degree earlier this year.

Roselli's appointment was not without controversey. had offered to do the job for free, in addition to his Central Regional duties. Parlapanides applied for the position, but was never interviewed.

This board turned down someone who was qualified and willing to do the job for $0 dollars a year. Instead that Board hired a Consultant to flip through local applicants and he got paid. The Board decided to hire someone for $148,000 per annum for five years and now we find out that this guy needs a "mentor" to do the job. Something is rotten and not in Denmark and we the taxpayers are again being made fools of. Time to vote a whole lot of people out of office.

Now, This is sad!!!! Just proves that the Berkeley Board of Ed. did NOT make the best choice and that Mr. Roselli was NOT the best person for the job. And the Board is yet again wasting more of our money!!!!! I really hope people remember this in November......And actually come out to vote!!!!!

Perhaps Roselli should pay for the mentor from his salary since he is not yet qualified to receive it. Nothing personal against Dr. Roselli but as others have said, just another waste of our $$$$$.

The money should NOT be paid with extra taxpayer dollars, but from the taxpayer salary of the so called qualified super. Also the BOE who sold this pick and forced the vote through as well approved the mentor fee also need to be held accountable. Once again taxpayers are made to pay for these piggies at the trough!

Yet another example of this board of Ed thumbing their nose at the tax payers. They think they can do whatever they want. Come November we need to change this board and let those people behind the scenes pulling the boards strings enough is enough. This board is more interested in promoting their own agenda and not worrying about the real people, the teachers and students. They say they save money yet they don't even consider a highly qualified currently EXPERIENCED superintendent to take the job who will do it for no extra salary. They hire an interim, hire a consulting firm, hire a new superintendent and now a mentor!! Where are the savings??? Let's change this board in Nivember. What other projects is this board wasting our money on?

You are all right! Something must be done about the BOE this has to me a joke who owed who a favor and how much will taxes go up because of this? What family member or friend got a nice check or excuse me non traceable cash from the outside company to do the job the BOE should have done.! Just my opinion as a tax payer... November is on its was and i don't have kids, but even a kid can see something wrong in this picture!

Isn't half the board appointed anyway? We didn't vote these people in they were appointed because they're "yes" men. Simply lapdogs for Vicari. Come this November I'm not voting for any sitting member on the board of Ed. I'll send them to the dog house with Vicari.

If Rich Starodub is mentoring, Berkeley will do just fine. Good Man!!
Thomas August 18, 2012 at 07:40 PM
The issue isn't whether the mentor will do his job, the issue is the reckless way the current board wastes the taxpayer money. We could've had a qualified superintendent at NO additional cost to the tax payer. Someone who is in favor of shared services and saving more money. Someone who could prepare the Berkekey students for Middle & High School. Instead we get a board that does what they want with no regard to the taxpayers, teachers and most importantly the students. Mt Roselli might be a good person but the fact is he along with the rest of the board are in "Vicaris Club". They don't know why they do what they do, that's why they explain nothing. They are given their orders from above and carry them out. Come this November that can change with new people. It's up to the voters of Berkekey to make that change.

Vote for " Quality Education and Fiscal Responsablity" in November. Keith Fisher George Kaminski Pat Mooney Lauren Ciccone The constant frustration with this current boards actions have compelled us all to run. With every taxpayers vote we can become their voice. We need to take politics out of this board and create a new working board for the taxpayers to generate new ideas, freshen old ones and spend money wisely.
Are you for real August 19, 2012 at 04:18 PM
Why doesn't he have to pay for mentorship? Teachers and principals do.
Thomas August 19, 2012 at 04:33 PM
Why didn't they hire Vicari again and have him mentor. He doesn't have enough jobs and hasnt taken quite enough money from the taxpayers of Berkekey and Ocean County.
gogo August 19, 2012 at 05:59 PM
so he is in training? Any relation to toms river super?
heather August 19, 2012 at 10:46 PM
No offense to Keith at all, don't know you, and agree that change is greatly needed, but please use spell check! This is the second post i have seen in which "responsibility" is misspelled. After all, your platform regarding quality education should, at the very least, be spelled correctly. I'm all for the change, but a glaring mistake like that shouldn't be in your catch phrase...

This job was handed to him quite frankly because he knows whereto place his lips. Our money is being wasted thoroughly and what is worse is our children are going to pay a price. The current administration more interested in the who can get you where and how much can I get on my way then our children.
voice of reason August 20, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Keith i could care less how you spell get in and fix this mess we need shared services

yes! free i agree. This is a fact 148,000 down the drain could have been used for multiple programs .

This is a fact 148,000 down the drain for Mr Roselli . We could have used for multiple programs . Not all students are doing well. Seems only when testing comes along Berkeley can have help after school something has to change.
