UPDATE: Berkeley Board of Ed Appoints Roselli As Superintendent, Bypasses Parlapanides

Details of contract won't be released until county superintendent approves document

The Berkeley Township Board of Education is set to approve a contract to hire James Roselli as superintendent, even though Central Regional Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides had offered to do the job for free.

The board voted unanimously at a special meeting Monday night to authorize Roselli's contract be sent to the Ocean County schools superintendent for approval, said board Vice President James Fulcomer.

"After the approval is secured, the board has to vote on the contract, most likely at the June 28 meeting," he said.

Details of Roselli's contract, including salary, benefits and length, cannot be released to the public until the board formally approves it, Fulcomer said.

The position has a $155,000 salary cap.

Roselli is the principal of the Berkeley Township Elementary School and interim director of special services.

The board hired the consulting firm Leadership Advantage for $6,500 on April 19 to begin a search for candidates. said in May at a community forum he did not expect to have a permanent superintendent on board until school opened in September.

after it was advertised and said he would assume the additional superintendent duties for free.

Although he was asked by board members to attend a closed session before the position was posted, said he did not feel comfortable doing that and preferred to wait until the job was advertised.

"I said I will gladly come in for an interview, once the job was posted," Parlapanides said tonight. "I just wanted it to be on the up and up, make sure it was done right in the public eye. I just wanted a fair process."

He was never interviewed by the board, said.

"I wish him (Roselli) well," said Parlapanides. "I hope he does what's best for the kids."

Marasco said at the May community forum he hoped to have a list of roughly six to seven candidates to present to the school board two weeks later.

"My job is not to pick the superintendent," Marasco said then. "It's to provide a short list of candidates. I will not give the board any applicants I have not had a face to face interview with."

Board President could not be reached for comment last night.

, said it would be more appropriate for Pellecchia to comment on why the board opted for Roselli, rather than someone who would do it free of charge.

Board members also appointed to serve as interim superintendent in late May. Morris has been paid $500 a day since June 1, for a total of $8,500 as of June 25.

The board's vote Monday night was the beginning of the end of a search for a permanent superintendent that dates back to June 2009. For a chronology,

Fulcomer (do as GOP says) June 26, 2012 at 01:48 PM
Fulcomer ran on the platform of shared services and "looking into" working with CR district, and you don't even interview a candidate to get the facts about him??? This is another example of the GOP picking an insider who is "one of them". This is now the 3rd time the Republicans in this town just do as they are told. Just ask a police offcier when you see one today how the Sergeant promotions went last week. They skipped on a civil service list for one "of their own". But then again, these people need to live with their careers being political grab, instead of on their own merit.

WOW! I also agree with Mike. This also goes to show how the BOE is not for the children of Berkeley and waste the taxpayers money. Who will take over the position of Director of Special Services? Let's not forget about the children who need those services in our school system.
CaresforBerk June 26, 2012 at 03:09 PM
Why have a part time super versus a full time super for little cost increase. Do you remember that this BOE has not increased taxes in three budgets?

There was an incident on a school trip this year right before the Stokes trip. A bunch of boys were joking around didnt harm anyone but were reprimanded at school and at home. My son happened to be one of those boys. I was told he could still go on the trip to Stokes then i received a phone call Thursday after school hours and was told my son could not go. When i had called the school the next day Mr Roselli wanted nothing to do with it. He said it was up to the "PEOPLE" in charge of the trip. Now i know why Mr Roselli would not get involved!!! Now i know that he was running for a position and didnt want any problems or to ruin his reputation. I have lost all respect for that man that trip was taken away from my son when he was a good kid and his principal should of stood behind him. Shows there is alot more behind the scene... people like me that dont know alot about politics really get the short end of the stick. From here on out i will be more involved in what happens i pay alot of tax dollars where i live. I think any child that gets in trouble though out the school year should have that trip taken away from them. They went to far and MR ROSELLI did nothing about it!! I feel the same way some of you feel... Im so shocked and aggravated... Sorry to get off topic so much but this news came to a shock to me this morning and the school year ended and im still pissed at what happened ... Waste of money...

Thinking the same thing......why...why....why....maybe the members of the school board want to divy up the salary and not us taxpayers???

November is coming and there are 4 seats up for grabs. Time for some new blood, vote new people in and lets shake things up. We can complain all we want to anyone who will listen, or read, but we have the power to make the real change. Make a positive change for the kids
stuffin June 26, 2012 at 06:29 PM
That will be my plan.

I think we need to focus on how the board is wasting our tax dollars by this move. I don't know much about Mr. Roselli, I hope he is good for the kids. However, what we do know is that the wasted dollars could have been used in the classroom, $6,500 to a firm to do a job that the current board could have done at no cost, why were dollars spent? Why an interim super, at this point it cost $ 8,500, again why spend that money when they hire someone that was right in front of them. $15,000 of wasted money, can we expect that this interim super gets a job in this district at another cost? I can't imagine she took this position knowing she would only be here for a month. Mr. Roselli, I hope, for our kids sake, that you are worth the approx. $450,000 to $750,000 for the life of your contract. The funny thing is,  the board didn't have spend a dime and we could have gotten a proven superintendent and spent the money in the classroom where it's needed most.

good for the kids? he is the number one guy against the stokes trip, no he is not good for our kids nor our school system, he collects his big paycheck and our town is only blur in his rear view mirror at the end of each day! I'm soooooo sick over this, looks like its going to a long year of boe meetings

How about you all figure this out and let IH go to TRS

So you're determining what's good for kids based on whether someone is for or against a trip that's been a hot button issue the past few years? Does this trip have anything to do with 6th grade curriculum?? I understand that this trip is a tradition but times are different. When it was started, there was a lot less students, costs were lower, and it revolved around current studies (making it an educational trip). If you're worried about what's "good for the kids", think about the ways this money could benefit kids if it was actually used on education. And since we live in a "not my kid" world, the possibility of lawsuits stemming from something that happened on this trip are pretty great. Which in return would cost more $ to the school system.
SamIAm June 27, 2012 at 12:29 PM
You clearly admit that you "don't know a lot about politics" but yet you feel this is a "waste of money"?? It's pretty tough to take this post serious when it's clear that you're still "pissed" (stay classy) about what happened to your son. I would love to hear what your definition of "joking around" is, and just because nobody was harmed does not mean that it wasn't something serious. Sounds like it was based on what actions were taken.

Just hang in there Dr. P. Soon there will be a new school board!

Its only a matter of time before somone gets caught with thier hand in the cookie jar. . . Shame on you

It's beginning to sound like Toms River Ritacco years with big firms paid big bucks out of Berkeley taxpayers pockets.

Love to see that $6,500 deal laid out for all of us to see. The candidate is in the building and that Board needed a consultant? Something is rotten and it isn't in Denmark.
foggyworld June 28, 2012 at 01:23 AM
Maybe it's time to have an Indepent party and list of candidates. The Board and the Town Council are wedded to ideas and platforms that really don't very often come into play in this town. Or at least they shouldn't. But something has to be done to open things up and maybe Independents with various approaches to education might help.
Gus Faella June 28, 2012 at 01:34 AM
Pay 155,000 or pay 0.00 doesn't take a genius to figure this out. How long has Mr Roselli been employed by BOE 7 maybe 8 years. He's done well for himself. GJF
Joe Semiraro June 28, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Just remember all this at election time. All the present BOE members other than Mr. Fulcumer voted to hire Mr. Roselli, who I understand is very qualified. But, even so, Dr. P is also well qualified and had offered to assume the responsibilities with no salary increase. This would have saved the Township approximately $150,000. Out of one side of our elected officials mouths you hear them say that they strive to curb the budget through shared services, yet out of the other side you hear them vote for an unnecessary expenditure when given the opportunity. Vote for officials who do what they say, not those who say one thing and do another.
Christine Dwight June 28, 2012 at 11:42 AM
How is Roselli very qualified for the position? He was a principal and then Director of special services. He just got his certificate to be a superintendent, that's what they were waiting for.
Chief Wahoo June 28, 2012 at 01:52 PM
Whats with all the superintendants named Roselli....
Scooter June 28, 2012 at 06:27 PM
Did anyone ever figure out that Mr. Roselli and Mr. Morasco are friends. They maintained a friendly relationship ever since Mr. Morasco worked for Berkeley. They went to basketball games at Seton Hall and Yankee games. Why did we ever spend that $6500. for Morasco to help find a Superintendent and why in the world would they hire an interim for 500 a day. Berkeley just spends good money after bad. Governor Christie would eat this information up. He talks about shared services all the time...And not to even interview Parlapanides is a shame. SHAME ON YOU BERKELEY!
karma June 29, 2012 at 03:11 AM
SamIAm do u have anything to say about the situation about Roselli or are you just on here to bash people. I was explaining how he didnt stick up for my son. He said one thing then didnt want to get involved when it came down to a bunch of angry parents he ran and hid, all because he was running for a position!! Thats really caring for kids....and i am assuming you never joked around as a kid. There are still good kids left in this world and at 11 they do "JOKE AROUND"
seen enough June 29, 2012 at 02:55 PM
Define the "incident" please
SamIAm June 29, 2012 at 03:09 PM
So let me get this straight...You make a post clearly bashing Roselli about how he did your son wrong. I respond to your post and another with, in my opinion, some valid points. How am I bashing people?! Because I offered some counter points on a few posts?? And how did you want him to stick up for your son? Your son got in trouble on one trip and therefore was not allowed to go on another. Seems like a normal decision to me, a decision that parents should have respected. See, that's the problem with a lot of today's parents, they don't want to take any sort of responsibility for their kids' actions. And as a result, a lot of kids have very little, if any, respect for any form of authority because they know their parents will stick up for them regardless of what they do. If anything, Roselli's decision shows me he DOES care for the kids. Being a good kid, or a bad kid for that matter, has nothing to do with it. It's about a kid knowing that there will be consequences based on bad decisions. If any of my children were in this position I would have told them, "That's the breaks. Stay out of trouble next time." Oh yeah, your son wasn't apart of any trouble, he was just joking around.
DoverLovesWaldenPond June 29, 2012 at 03:24 PM
It sounds like you didn't see the piece that said Roselli would keep those responsibilities, showing a net DECREASE of 130K (what they would pay the DSS).
DoverLovesWaldenPond June 29, 2012 at 03:28 PM
I disagree with your math. Had they allowed Dr P to take on the superintendent responsibilities, they would still have been paying for a Director of Special Services at $131,000 - the net savaings was only 19K per year - to have a dedicated super, not bad.
foggyworld July 04, 2012 at 01:37 PM
Americans are finally waking up to the power of the vote. That Board has to go because it continues to ignore the wishes of the taxpayers.
Twinsmom August 06, 2013 at 12:06 AM
Mr Roselli is the worst person they could have elected to run Berkeley schools! My son went to BTES when he was in charge. A child in my sons class wrote on a note saying that he wanted to kill my son and the note was given to the teacher. The teacher gave the note to Mr Roselli and then it disappeared! I was called to pick up my child and he was escorted out the school to my car. The next day my son went to school and the boy that threatened him was there in his class sitting across from him! I went to the police and was told by the officers that Mr Roselli didn't know what note I was talking about and he refused to admit to knowing anything about the incident! My son was out of school for weeks because if a man that is supposed to protect children would cover up a crime then there is no telling what he would do!!!
