White Sands Beach: Shore's 'Best-Kept Secret'

Municipal oceanfront beach and facilities open on June 18

There's no boardwalk. No concession stands. No rides. No games.

But if you're looking for a quiet, clean oceanfront beach, White Sands Beach in the South Seaside Park  section of the township is a good bet.

"It's a nice place to take a family for the day,"  says Laura Shaw, a principal clerk typist in the Berkeley Township Parks and Recreation Department. "It's the best-kept secret."

The beach officially opens on June 18, when township lifeguards are on duty. Pre-season badges for adults are $30. Badges for children under 12 and residents 62 and older are free.

Beach badges can be purchased at preseason prices from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 4 and June 11 at the lifeguard station on 23rd Avenue. Badges are also available Monday through Friday at the township Recreation Building on Route 9 in Bayville.

The price for regular season badges goes up to $35 on June 18.

Restrooms and an outside shower are available. No food is permitted on the beach.

"You can bring a jug of water, that's about it," Shaw said. "If you want to have a picnic, go to Island Beach."

White Sands Beach is four blocks long. It runs from 20th to 23rd Avenue in the South Seaside Park section of the township.
