Township Council Approves 2012 Municipal Budget in Split Vote

Deferred charges, tax appeals result in hike in amount to be raised by taxation

Homeowners here will see a small rise in their municipal taxes this year, after the Township Council adopted the $40,266,566 2012 budget in a split vote.

The vote was taken after council members approved a budget amendment that increased the amount to be raised by taxation by $864,000. That will translate into a roughly two cent increase in the municipal purposes tax rate, Township Administrator Frederick Ebenau said.

The increase is due to a drop in the reserve for uncollected taxes, deferred charges and a record number of tax appeals, he said at the Township Council meeting tonight.

Township Councilman Thomas Grosse abstained on the vote. Grosse, who was elected in 2011, said he had to keep his campaign pledge not to raise taxes.

"I feel the mayor and the business administrator did the best with what they had," Grosse said. "But I made a promise I would not vote to raise taxes. I have to abstain."

Councilwoman Fran Siddons cast the lone no vote. Siddons also said she had to keep a campaign pledge.

"Based on my principals, because of what I ran on, I have to vote no on this budget," she said.

Township officials had said earlier this year there would be no increase in the amount to be raised by taxation. The hike in the tax rate means residents with homes assessed at the township average of $202,000 would pay an extra $40 per year in municipal taxes, Ebenau said.

A tax raise, SURPRISE. Due to a drop in "uncollected taxes". Great, we pay ours so charge us more. Seems fair.

I had to abstain?????? Grosse you are an absolute idiot. You are there to work on the budget too. You allowed the increase as well. You weren't elected to abstain. Nice try on saying you aren't responsible as well. Good job voting NO Siddons. Thats called making a decision.

I agree with Why vote, kudos to Siddons for voting no, Grosse you should have done the same. I am paying taxes on a home valued at $134,000, appraised at $100,000 three years ago, and I am sure would not sell at anywhere near that price now. Time for a tax appeal, of course they make it quite complicated for the average person. As for United Water, a multimillion dollar company who should not expect the customer to pay for improvements, they had that money in their coffers before making any, just pure greed! My electric and GAS bills have decreased, UW is the only utility increasing, I am sick to death of reps and politicians in the pockets of the utilities, NJ politics as usual.

That is a politician speaking (and i think a public employee cop).....didnt have the guts to VOTE NO !!!!......so then in his mind by abstaining he did not vote to raise taxes.....when of course the final count was already in and he could CYA with BS....sorry, not going to work Grosse, you now have a record as liar and will be called out on in every future post !!! THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE OF EITHER GANG OF THIEFS !!!!!.....YOUR TAXES ALWAYS GO UP !!!!........WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!!!!!

Didn't take long for Grosse to ruin his political career. Truly unbelievable. Also, his runnng mates, Bacchione and Ray also said they would not raise taxes, so they are liars too. But at least they had the balls to Yes, and did not try to hide behind BS. Does Grosse think us taxpayers are that stupid?? Enjoy your one term
