Township Council 2014 Organization Meeting Slated For Today In Town Hall

by Patricia A. Miller

Township officials will convene at 1:30 p.m. today at Town Hall on Pinewald-Keswick Road for the 2014 organization meeting.

Republicans representatives from all four ward seats on the Township Council will be sworn in. They had already won their seats before the November election, since no Democrats filed to run.

They include:
• Current Township Council President James J. Byrnes, who represents Ward 1.

Byrnes - the former longtime president of the Berkeley Board of Education - was first appointed in January of 2012 to replace council member Karen Davis, who resigned because of health reasons. He won a one-year term in November 2012, then a four-year term in 2013. He recently announced he was running for the Third District Congressional Seat currently held by Jon Runyon.

• Newcomer Angelo Guadagno will be sworn in to the Ward 2 seat. He will replace current Ward 2 Councilman Kevin Askew, who declined to run for a second term.

• Council Vice-President Judy Noonan will be sworn in to another term for the Ward 3 seat.

Sophia Gingrich will be sworn into the Ward 4 seat. Current Ward 4 Councilwoman Fran Siddons did not go down without a fight after the local Republican Club's screening committee snubbed her in her quest for a second term. Gingrich was selected instead.

The council will also choose the 2014 Township Council president and vice-president. Byrnes has served as council president for two years. Word on the street is that both Byrnes and Noonan want the position.

Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. and council members will also announce the township professionals for 2014.
