Public hearing at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday

South Seaside Park residents will have a chance to sound off about Shore Water Company's request for a 31 percent rate increase at a public hearing in Town Hall on Thursday.

Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said on the township's website that the Township Council plans to pass a resolution opposing the proposed rate hike at the Nov. 18 council meeting.

"As Mayor, along with the Township Council, we vehemently oppose this rate increase and have authorized our attorney to file a petition in opposition," the mayor said.

The state Division of Ratepayer Advocate will hold the public hearing at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Town Hall at 627 Pinewald-Keswick Road, he said.

"In the wake of Super Storm Sandy, where many of our residents are still struggling to get back in their homes, a rate increase of this magnitude is unconscionable," Amato said. "The Council and I stand together and will do what we can to oppose this rate increase."

Residents who cannot attend the meeting can contact the Ratepayer Advocate by e-mail - njratepayer@rpa.state.nj.us. or by phone: 609-984-1460; fax: 609-292-2923. The mailing address is: The Division of Rate Counsel 140 East Front Street 4th Floor P.O. Box 003 Trenton, N.J. 08625
