Possible Shark Sighting: Seaside Park Lifeguards Briefly Clear Two Beach Areas

Move was a precaution, swimmers allowed back in

briefly cleared the beach in front of two lifeguard stands early this afternoon after one guard thought he saw a bull shark, Sgt. James Rankin of the Seaside Park lifeguard detail said.

The guards also noticed a number of skates in the water, he said.

"It was just to be on the safe side, Rankin said.

Rankin stressed the possible shark sighting was unconfirmed and added that it could have been a skate. Swimmers were allowed back in the water shortly after, he said.

"It was probaby just a skate," Rankin said.

The areas briefly cleared were in the vicinity of North Ocean Avenue and M street

"Everybody's back in swimming," he said at 2:20 p.m.
