UPDATE: Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus Dies

Polhemus, 84 died at an area hospital last night, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari says

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus died late last night at an area hospital, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari confirmed this morning.

Polhemus, 84, had some type of cardiac procedure earlier in the week and seemed to be "doing fine," Vicari said.

"Then late last night around 11 p.m., he passed away," he said.

Polhemus was just re-elected to another three-year term in November. It will be up to Gov. Chris Christie to appoint his successor, Ocean County GOP Chairman George R. Gilmore said.

"It would last until there is an election in November," Gilmore said.

Funeral arrangements for Polhemus have not yet been announced, he said.

"We are going to miss him," Gilmore said. "He dedicated his life to law enforcment in Ocean County. He was a good person. His family is in our prayers."

Until Christie appoints a successor, Undersheriff William T. Sommeling will oversee the department, Gilmore said.

Polhemus would have entered his 28th year as sheriff in 2013. During the campaign, some questioned whether the aging sheriff would be able to perform his duties.

Polhemus declined to debate with his two opponents and never responded to Patch's numerous requests for an interview.

But he won re-election easilym garnering nearly 56 percent of the vote for sheriff with 110,450 votes. Democratic challenger George "Bob" Armstrong garnered 82,031 votes cast, and Independent John McMenamin received less than 3 percent, with 5,140 votes.

Come back to Patch later for more information on this developing story.

Rip Bill The best person for the job. Kind honest man kept ocean county crime rate as one of the lowest in the state.
Cherrie Mooney December 16, 2012 at 07:01 pm
Sincere Condolences to the entire Polhemus family. You will all be in my prayers.

Met him several years back when he was still in good health. Very pleasant man ,easy to talk to. I did not vote for him lately, thought he was not really able to do the job. This is not time or place, however, out of respect for his family to be besmirching his memory. It's a lowlife thing to do.
Rick December 16, 2012 at 10:06 pm
Like that's never been done before. Think Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Throm Thurman to name a few.
Rick December 16, 2012 at 10:34 pm
You forgot the 'rest of the story'. Ashcroft ran against the then governor of Missouri, Mel Carnahan. When Carnahan died the lieutenant governor became governor and announced that if Carnahan won the election he would appoint Mrs Carnahan to fill the Senate seat.
So Ashcroft didn't, in fact, lose to Carnahan but rather to his widow.

Nancy Russo- What did the Sheriff do to you that you have no respect?
Ken December 17, 2012 at 12:49 am
Arlene you know it has to be one or the other, we need to keep builing on these double and triple dippers and you know Christie will do nothing about it sice they are all Republicans.
Ken December 17, 2012 at 12:50 am
I agree with Nancy Russo
Ken December 17, 2012 at 12:52 am
Jenny I prefer Barney Fife myself, probably the most qualified of anyone I can think of , especially in this area
Ken December 17, 2012 at 12:53 am
I agree with you Chief
Ken December 17, 2012 at 12:55 am
with the ocean county voters I am positive he would win again
Ken December 17, 2012 at 01:01 am
As many have stated if you don't have anything nice to say than don't say anything at all, so at this point I will take their advice and say nothing at all.....
WMS826 December 17, 2012 at 01:14 am
Nice guy or not he had a duty and an obligation to step down.
How many days did he spend in the office, how much did he do on a daily basis. He was in fact being paid let us not forget.
Rick December 17, 2012 at 01:47 am
To repeat, how about Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Throm Thurman? Did they have an obligation and duty to step down due to age and illness?
How many days DID he spend in the office? Do you have access to the county attendance records? If so, let us know.
Rick December 17, 2012 at 01:49 am
Speaking of days in the office, what about someone who has 2 week, 4 million dollar Christmas vacations in Hawaii?
Rick December 17, 2012 at 02:23 am
Oh gosh, we have Ken dissing "this area".
I wonder why he and his like-thinking friends moved here in the first place and why they stayed.

I feel bad for his family as I would for anyone who lost a loved one. I'm sure in his personal life he was loved. My political views will be voiced on another thread that will sure to follow at some point when it is more appropriate. I should note that I have seen many threads after articles of people dying that were much worse than what I have read here but that doesn't mean that it is right or that it should continue. I have said for a very long time that when it comes to posting articles of someone who passed that comments should not be allowed. EVERY SINGLE time people write horrible hatred filled things even if they have no clue as to the facts. Examples are: the story of the kids whose car ran into the elementary school and they all died. People made assumptions and said things that were nauseating and by the way turned out not to be true. Same thing when the boy named Ryan died days after graduation from Central. They should stop allowing posts for stories like this. The political stories will follow and people can post on them.

RIP Bill. This outcome was foreseen by the party bosses who WANTED him to run yet again ... ( at 84 and in poor health ) so an appointment could be made by those in charge along there party lines....and as usual..it worked..as it always does by the OC ..GOP.....blind leading the blind to the slaughter house ..so the triple dippers WIN !!!
LT Guy December 17, 2012 at 05:51 pm
Say Opinionated, is that more "Southern Hospitality"? You lemmings are so blinded by the letters "R" and "D" that you continue taking up the keyster from a small group of hoodlums who live like royalty while the rest of us barely get by. What's that? Did I hear you say "thank you sir, may I have another"?
Rick December 17, 2012 at 06:10 pm
Remember FDR? If not read about him. By 1940 he was already suffering from
atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. The people reelected him to two more terms. He served less than three months of his unprecedented fourth term. Maybe the Democrats had planned for Wallace or Truman to replace him before the election.
WMS826 December 17, 2012 at 09:01 pm
Yes they did, and what is your point.
WMS826 December 17, 2012 at 09:02 pm
The annointed one...the one who will all lead you to the end of the USA.
WMS826 December 17, 2012 at 09:03 pm
What did Nancy regan say...just say no...who cares that they WANTED him to run, he still signed his name and said YES.
Portia December 18, 2012 at 06:04 pm

Hi Pat: Thank you so much for your time & efforts. You know how important I feel a free,Read More independent and viable press is. Freedom of the press is one of our countires most vital rights and needs to be protected, literally at all costs. Without the ability for the average citizen to investigate, critiicise, praise and comment on government, business, education and all facets of our lives the Great American Democracy would not exist - even if it does produce annonymous curmudgeons like the Chief and the rest of the fan club. ;-) That being said, the digital media world is still trying to find its way into a viable business model. I was very excited about the 'hyper' local idea of the Patch, but the challenges you mentioned are real. However, I do feel based on my dealing with the Patch on several levels (blogger, community person & advertiser) the corporate leadership does not quite get the 'hyper-local' idea - they like it only if it produces revenue. What comes firt guys, the classic 'chicken or the egg'. Advertising is all about numbers, and in our community that was tough to overcome - I see both sides. It was a pleasure having a 'hometown' reporter that actually had the knowledge, perspective and understanding of our community as only one that lives here can. You will be missed on these pages, but it will be still be good to see you around town! So good luck to you in Lacey & Barnegat, Ill be happy to share any of my contacts, never dull there either! This has been one heck of a learning experience and yes, it has exhausted so many of us. The onlyRead More way to keep going really is to take it one day at a time and know if you wake up tomorrow something you never dreamed of is bound to happen.
answertwoit June 5, 2013 at 10:52 pm
all three siddons lost. Kukla Fran and Ollie... you ran for revenge and not for the people. itRead More showed and you lost.
Brian Wilson June 6, 2013 at 02:12 pm
Quit whining, Fran. You were always just in it for yourself. You wanted to be "CouncilwomanRead More Fran Siddons." Most people saw right through you. You biggest mistake was believing your inflated sense of self.
Terry LiCausi June 7, 2013 at 02:43 pm
Why couldn't you just write a classy speech, you chose to look like a sore loser once again. YouRead More listed reasons for losing and you and I both, know you tried to talk to the board workers and the Republican Challenger had to ask you to stop. You stood right outside the doors and tried to talk to voters also, you did this at all the polling places. You had 3 challengers to 1 republican challenger at the polls, so how could all that you say get done. Why didn't they call the election board? Come on Fran, just admit the people DO REMEMBER and that is why you lost.
