No Upsets in Ocean County Freeholder Primaries

Joe Vicari the GOP nominee; Timothy E. Ryan to represent the Democrats this fall

Incumbent Ocean County Freeholder Joseph Vicari handily won the right to represent his party in the 2014 general election Tuesday night, besting his opponent John B. Paolella by a 10,000 vote difference.

Vicari, who has served on the freeholder board since 1981, received 14,637 votes compared to Paolella's 4,704 with all but two districts reporting, according to the Ocean County Clerk's office.

On the Democratic side, longtime Ocean County Democrat Timothy E. Ryan received 6,309 votes compared to challenger Joe Lamb's 1,282 votes. Ryan was supported by the county's Democratic organization while Lamb, a Brick resident, ran a campaign to challenge the establishment, as he has done in recent municipal elections in his home town.

With 107,240 registered Republican voters compared with 73,756 registered Democrats in Ocean County, Vicari is a favorite to win re-election to the seat he has occupied 33 years.
