No Surprises in Uncontested Primary

Vote totals for Varano and Amato not far apart

Democratic Mayor Jason J. Varano received 36 more votes in the June 7  primary than his Republican challenger, Council Vice-President Carmen J. Amato Jr.

Both men were uncontested in the race for the four-year mayoral term.

Varano, who is seeking his fourth term, received 1,506 votes. Amato, who has served two terms on the Township Council, received 1,470 votes, according to the Ocean County Clerk's Office.

In the race for the three at-large, three-year terms on the Township Council, James L. Egan was the top vote getter on the Democratic slate with 1,414 votes. Anthony R. Mazzella received 1,299 votes, followed by Edward H. Olsen with 1,260 votes.

John A. Bacchione was the top Republican vote getter, with 1,453 votes. Thomas Grosse Jr.  received 1,337 votes, followed by Robert G. Ray with 1,320 votes, according to the clerk's office.

In the race for the one, three-year term on the Ocean County Board of Freeholders, longtime Republican incumbent Joseph H. Vicari received 12,108 votes. His Democratic challenger Michele Rosen received 6,423 votes.
