Marine Killed In Afghanistan Left Behind Wife, Three Children

Funeral arrangements announced for 25-year-old Christopher Monahan of Island Heights

Christopher M. Monahan's last tour of duty in the Middle East was his third deployment away from his wife and three small children.

The young man joined the U.S. Marines after he graduated from Central Regional High School in 2006. He lived most of his life in Ocean Gate, but had moved to Island Heights before his deployment, according to his obituary from Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River.

Monahan - a Marine Corps motor vehicle operator assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force - was killed on Nov. 26 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said earlier this week.

The 2006 graduate of Central Regional High School was previously deployed twice to Iraq before his deployment to Afghanistan.

His obituary from Anderson and Campbell describes Monahan as "an amazing and loving father, son, brother, grandson and friend."

He leaves his wife Sarah, and his children Nathan, Kierlyn and Caleb; his parents Christopher M. Monahan, Sr. and Sandra Monahan; maternal grandparents Lenny and Linda Adams of Toms River and paternal grandmother Leah Monahan of Bayville; his brother Matt, sister Kaitlyn and his best friend and second brother Rob Zilavetz. Chris is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, according to his obituary.

Monahan's visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St in Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at at St. Barnabas R.C. Church, 33 Woodland Avenue in Bayville. Burial will follow at Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.

He was the second Central Regional graduate killed in action in little more than a year.

Army Sgt. John A. Lyons, 26, class of 2003, died in late October last year of wounds he suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire, in Ghazni province, Afghanistan.

Lyons' name is one of four plaques at the newly-dedicated War Memorial at Central Regional. The dedication ceremony was held the day before Hurricane Sandy hit. Monahan's name will be on the fifth plaque.

Willy Nilly is this really the right thread to be talking politics I don't think so. Please show some respect and mourn a hero that fought for his nation and defended freedom
Willy Nilly December 2, 2012 at 09:59 pm
My point is that his death was unnecessary as much as it was sad. Osama Bin Laden was a CIA asset, so our whole reason for being there is hogwash. We've been occupying these lands and murdering these civilians, no wonder why they hate us! Look at Bradley Manning and what he did to expose this war machine!

@nilly this is not the place for your political bs. A Marine has died and his children won't see there dad on Christmas. So take it somewhere else u SOB.
OceanCountyNJ December 2, 2012 at 11:33 pm
Christopher died defending our freedoms. Including your freedom of speech, Willy Nilly. Maybe you should look for another forum for your opinions.
Colton Cotton December 2, 2012 at 11:47 pm
Wow, 25 with 3 kids!? I normally disprove of having kids under 25, but he fought for my freedom so I still respect him.

Camp Dwyer belongs to the Marines exclusively in southern Aghan. I worked as civilian this year and I saw what a sacrifice these young men and women do for us in such hot weather 110 degrees during the day and dry dry land. Our military is one of our nations national treasures that we should all embrace no matter your politics. Country first..
Rob December 3, 2012 at 02:10 am
My sincere condolences for his family. Don't let his wife and children forget that he was a genuine American Hero. My son is in infantry training right now for the Marines. Watching what he has gone through in just these last six months is awe inspiring. You certainly can't make it through without a passion for this country and a passion for your fellow Marines. The obituary said he was a truck driver. Truth be told, he was a patriotic warrior who also happened to drive trucks. May Gods grace cover this family and bring them comfort.
MTansey December 3, 2012 at 02:32 am
Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice you and your family have made for our freedom. May your children grow to know that their Dad was a hero. God Bless.

Are your political attacks necessary to post on a page where family members are possibly reading to mourn their loss? Cpl Monahan had a belief to join our beloved corps and he died for that belief. He is a hero in this Marines eyes and many others. Have some respect. Not everyone is a bleeding heart liberal against war. My thoughts and prayers go out to Cpl Monahans family. Semper Fi!

Here I was scrolling down the comments, echoing the sentiments of the above comments and thinking "wow, so far not one negative thought!"
Thanks for being an ass, Willy. This is why society cannot have nice things.

Thank God we have Americans like him .
Andy Barcellona December 3, 2012 at 02:00 pm
You know Willy each comment you make shows just what an ignorant piece of crap you are. Obviously you never served your country but want to enjoy the freedom of what this young brave Marine gave you. Your family must be very proud that you are no more then a blood sucking leech.
barbara December 3, 2012 at 02:02 pm
why even respond to idiotic comments? There are people who sit at their computers all day looking for a chance to make stupid comments so that people will respond. They get their "jollies" by doing this. Don't feed their sickness. Rest in peace Cpl. Monahan.
Andy Barcellona December 3, 2012 at 02:12 pm
You are right Barbara but being an Army veteran I want people to know that this Marine deserves our utmost respect. If Willy Nilly thinks this is funny he should rot in Hell.
Dee December 3, 2012 at 02:17 pm

You are an idiot for posting something like this. How would it be if it was your son that died, you come on here and read this? Are you saying that there son died for nothing? Take your crap elsewhere.
Robert Yates December 3, 2012 at 04:09 pm
Perhaps this is not the place for Willy Nilly to make a political point, and it is always a tragedy when a young family man passes over, but loyalty to one's country should not trump the truth. And many here have made the political point that soldiers die for our freedoms. Re: Robert Prol: there are vast oil reserves in most of the 'stans to the north of Afghanistan and a pipeline south to the Arabian sea would be very helpful. Afghanistan also has mineral reserves in excess of 1 trillion dollars. Perhaps this is not the reason for our invasion, but it is also not out of the realm of possibility. Also, a good argument can be made that we were attacked on 9/11 because of our presence and control overseas, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar; bin laden has made this clear time and time again. It has very little to do with our way of life and our freedoms. It is things like the Patriot Act and the NDAA that take away our freedoms, not tribesman with AK-47s, RPGs or knife cutters. Again, perhaps a different forum should be used for this discussion, but it is an important discussion to have. Eternal rest grant unto Mr. Monahan, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Rest in peace you are a true American Hero and i pray for all of your family at this time and most of all for your small kids
frank rizzo December 3, 2012 at 11:14 pm
my heart and condolences go out to his family and especially his 3 children. he gave his life in service to his country and i hope he and others like him get the respect they deserve. i hope this govt makes sure his wife and kids are provided for God knows they have enough on their plate to worry about besides financial or health cost issues. no matter what your opinion on the war is i think we can all agree we want all of them home now. bn you are truly sickening to use this for your anti obama nonsense. you do this on every thread about a fallen soldier i dont know why the patch hasnt banned you yet.
Patricia Scaduto December 4, 2012 at 12:23 pm
Too young, too many deployments. My heart and prayers go out to your family. My dad served in WWII but he was lucky and came home. He was serving his country and I hope that all Americans appreciate the sacrifice these young people are making. When I see a person in uniform I thank them and God Bless them. He is at peace and may your family in time find the same. God Bless you all and your family will be in my prayers
Uncle Moe December 4, 2012 at 07:16 pm
Our wars in the middle east are totally illegitimate! WE are the real terrorists, for killing innocent women and children with drone strikes. This poor man was just a cog in the machine, I feel bad for him.

MAY THE GRACE OF GOD BE WITH HIM AND HIS FAMILY,,,RIP

I served with Cpl. Monahan in Iraq on my 2nd deployment which was his first, He was a good man and great Marine. He Died so that Americans can have all of our freedoms, one for instant, freedom of speech. That being said have some respect, there is a time and place for your political views and this is neither. Let him rest in peace, and let his family and his brothers in arms mourn in peace. RIP Monny, SEMER FI -Cpl. Trippi, USMC

I'm glad you are home. We are still repairing in LBI but, hopefully, we will back by the 4th ofRead More July. This was not our "primary" home but it still was our home. We will never forget Oct. 29, 2012.

This has been one heck of a learning experience and yes, it has exhausted so many of us. The onlyRead More way to keep going really is to take it one day at a time and know if you wake up tomorrow something you never dreamed of is bound to happen.

all three siddons lost. Kukla Fran and Ollie... you ran for revenge and not for the people. itRead More showed and you lost.
Brian Wilson June 6, 2013 at 02:12 pm
Quit whining, Fran. You were always just in it for yourself. You wanted to be "CouncilwomanRead More Fran Siddons." Most people saw right through you. You biggest mistake was believing your inflated sense of self.
Terry LiCausi June 7, 2013 at 02:43 pm
Why couldn't you just write a classy speech, you chose to look like a sore loser once again. YouRead More listed reasons for losing and you and I both, know you tried to talk to the board workers and the Republican Challenger had to ask you to stop. You stood right outside the doors and tried to talk to voters also, you did this at all the polling places. You had 3 challengers to 1 republican challenger at the polls, so how could all that you say get done. Why didn't they call the election board? Come on Fran, just admit the people DO REMEMBER and that is why you lost.
