Longtime Ocean County Sheriff Faces Two Challengers In Bid For Tenth Term

84-year-old William L. Polhemus will run against Democrat Robert Armstrong and independent William McMenamin

Ocean County Sheriff will have to fend off two challengers in the race for the three-year term as the county's top law enforcement official.

Polhemus, 84, received 20,409 votes or 99.4 percent of Republican votes cast in yesterday's primary. There were also 121 write-ins, according to the Ocean County Clerk's Office.

He will go up against Democrat and independent John McMenamin in the November election.

Armstrong, 68, received 7,655 votes, or 99.6 percent of Democratic votes cast. There were also 24 write-in votes. He has more than 40 years in law enforcement.

He has served as a Special Agent with U.S. Army Intelligence, the FBI and the U.S. Treasury. He retired as a Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations after 32 years of service. He also served as a state investigator/detective with the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and as a special agent with the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation.

McMenamin, Surf City, is a former Stafford Township mayor. He is running under the slogan "Call of Duty."

Polhemus has served as Ocean County Sheriff since 1986. Prior to that, he was police chief of the Seaside Heights Police Department and served 35 years in the department.

Out of Ocean County's 370,754 total registered voters, 33,685, or 9.09 percent, went to the polls yesterday, according to the clerk's office.

Ocean County has a total of 103,797 registered Republican voters. of that amount, 24,925 or 24 percent voted in Tuesday's primary.

Ocean County has 73,474 registered Democratic voters. Of that amount, 8,760, or 11.92 percent, went to the polls yesterday.

Sheriff Polhemus is a very nice man, but I honestly think its time to step down. When he started in law enforcement we still had an active train running in Toms River, a wooden bridge crossing the bay, and Toms River Chemical Corporation was still a good thing.
So Much to Say June 06, 2012 at 06:33 PM
Polhemus is unable to be out without a keeper. Me and many suspect he is suffering from something like dementia. The GOP should've thought it out better (or maybe they did).....Polhemus is gonna retire during his term and Mastronardi is gonna finish his term. Thats the fodder going arround Washington Street.

(they did) In Ocean County, Republicans always run as incumbents regardless of whether or not they have ever been elected before. I'm pretty sure it's in the county charter. Sheriff Bill has enjoyed a gifted life serving in Ocean County and I wish him well to the end of time. While his departure and successor have probably reached the plan a and plan b stages, it's always nice to hear that someone with some experience has been handpicked to serve. As for the other guy, well, maybe he should seek a position in Barnegat as a model-airplane airstrip manager some residents are seeking. For that job, he's well-trained and well-qualified.

Polhemus has a third challenger god, will he make November? Let’s face it man shared a locker with Washington at Valley Forge!
Mac June 06, 2012 at 09:10 PM
Frankly, this year, Sheriff Bill has a more secure victory opportunity if he has the misfortunate to pass prior to the election. I'm not aware of any Ocean County Republican candidate not being elected simply because they died prior to the election. Perhaps George shared that info with Bill at Valley Forget. Even back then, the dead successfully voted in Ocean County. If I were Sheriff Bill, I’d worry about who was spicing my apple pie if Armstrong proves to be any kind of realistic threat.

Has anybody check the fine sheriffs pulse lately. He is everything that is wrong with politics. Retire and let a younger man/woman (and that is alot of people) have a crack at it.

McMenamin is a GOP plant. It has Gilmore's fingerprints all over it. The GOP did the same thing in Barnegat last year when they got a Democrat to run as an "independent" and split the anti-incumbent vote enabling the GOP incumbent to win re-election by 11 votes. In 2010 the Dems ran a Tea Party "plant" to draw votes away from Runyan in the 3rd cd but it didn't work as they were exposed by the Courier-Post. Gilmore is shaking in his Guccis at the propect of a Dem taking over the sheriff's office and all the patronage that comes with it. He'll try every trick in the book to avoid that prospect.

Split what vote? McMenamin is only running to champion a 7th season of Jersey Shore. Since his follow-the-leader vision for the merger of Stafford and Surf City went south, his new vision appears to be attracting MTV producers to Surf City for a 9th District Summer Jamboree (aka: Woodstock South 2013.) Ah, Snookie with a pair of six shooters and spurs. Ocean City, eat your heart out :-)

Since this is a Presidential year, Armstrong will get a little more then 60,000 votes. Polhemus will get about 100,000 and McMenimin less the 10,000 votes. They could nominate a couch and the couch would get elected if it was a GOP couch. That's what I was told by Mastranardi when I ran.

Believe me, Gilmore is not shaking in his boots. The old guy Polhelmus will win again. Don't you get it? The R's will vote down the party line , Polhemus will win , take that to the bank. Armstrong has not chance. Like who is his backers? The local Dem org, Michelle Rosen, Paul Brush, Nels Luttman, Wyatt Earp? They ran him because they can and he will win.

Wall Fly in TR June 08, 2012 at 02:44 AM
Polhemus will win, he will be declared insane and Mastronardi will be Sheriff. He'll bring Boyd & Hutler in as his Undersheriff's and it will be the best Sheriff's Department in the state in his first term. It's all about the CRHS connection; just ask GG.

Republican incumbents in Ocean County, NJ are always re-elected, no matter what!!! Remember a few years ago when the Republican Surrogate was re-elected after he had passed away!!!! I wondered if the family was probably sworn to secrecy until after the election? If so, how sad that must have been for them. Two party politics in action, again in Ocean County,NJ. Time to shake the tree and go INDEPENDANT, no matter who the candidate is.

STOP Ocean County Court Corruption VOTE For George "BOB" Armstrong for the sheriff's term in November. I am the victim of fraud, lies, Judicial brutality, bullying, frame-ups, and the corruption of Ocean County Court with respect to the very complicated “ Happy City” litigation incidents which were contaminated with classical Asian Market Gangsters’ game: to frame an innocent party for the purpose of achieving political or economical gain. The Republican in Ocean County is doing business with the Swindlers to assist Valent Ramatjandra INC to fraud and steal from TAXpayers. The Judges in Ocean County Court Support Fraud, confidence games, and (Pratiwi) Valent Ramatjansra INC’s International economical criminal gangsters’ business practice in New Jersey to harm licensed good small business owners to advance their political influence. DON'T Vote Polhemus!!! Joe Vicari and William Polhemus support the swindlers, Chang Nein Ho, Pratiwi Ramatjandra, and Enna Chin’s Fraud in New Jersey to steal from Taxpayers. Frederick John LaVergne for Congress October 08, 2012 at 09:34 PM
Tired of the status quo? Unwilling to surrender to the two Georges? (Gilmore and Norcross?) I am running with (Independent) Democratic-Republicans Scott Neuman and Tracy Caprioni for the seat that is open to election on November 6th for the NJ Third Congressional District. We have joined together to restore the application of the Constitution - the WHOLE Constitution, and to seek out, expose, and excise any local, county, State, and National corruption we can find. Our proposal, the "Change the Rules" Pledge, offers a solution to campaign finance reform that circumvents the Supreme Court decision of Citizens United v. Federal Election Board. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with the people of your community. Less than a month remains. "Stand for what's right, or settle for what's left" - Frederick John LaVergne, "Democratic-Republican" for Congress, NJ District Three.

Don't we have term or age limits for these positions?
