Longtime Berkeley Police Chief Announces Retirement

Chief John C. Weinlein III set to step down on July 31

Longtime Police Chief John C. Weinlein III has sent a letter to township officials announcing his retirement on July 31.

Weinlein joined the Berkeley police department as a patrolman on Sept. 1, 1979. He has served as police chief since Oct. 19, 2000, Mayor Jason J. Varano said.

"Chief Weinlein has been an important person in our community and police department and will be greatly missed," Varano said.

A new chief will be appointed by Aug. 1, the mayor said.
