Curfews Reinstated In Glen Cove, Good Luck Point And Berkeley Shores

Curfews remain in effect in South Seaside Park and Pelican Island

Three and a half months after Superstorm Sandy, township officials have decided to reinstate curfews in most of the waterfront sections of town.

Township Council members voted unanimously at the Feb. 11 council meeting to prohibit pedestrian traffic after 5 p.m. in the Good Luck Point, Glen Cove and Berkeley Shores sections of the township.

Curfews remain in effect in South Seaside Park and Pelican Island, Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said.

"We had some residents request the curfew to limit pedestrian traffic in Glen Cove and Good Luck Point," Amato said. "Berkeley Shores is also included, mainly the areas that have been affected by the superstorm. This is to help our police patrol these areas and help protect personal property."

Police arrested two brothers on Oct. 31, after they paddled over to Pelican Island on Barnegat bay by kayak shortly after Hurricane Sandy.

Detective Will Cullen found Douglas J. Polle, Jr. 26, Grant Avenue, Pine Beach, and Tyler Polle, 22, Compass Avenue, Beachwood in the backyard of a home on South Sunset Drive.

The men told police they were taking pictures for National Geographic. Both men were charged with trespassing and possession of marijuana.

In late December, two Toms River women were charged in connection with thefts from a flood-ravaged residence on Balsam Drive.

And camera systems are going up in some of these areas. Steal elsewhere.

I don't get it. You can drive through anytime and walk around but only up until 5 p.m.? What's the point?
