Blizzard Knocked Out Garbage Pickup to Some; Expected to Return to Normal

Residents slated for Monday or Tuesday pickups lost this week's scheduled stops

Worried about cramming two weeks' worth of garbage into your robocans for the next pickup?

Don't be, says Mayor Jason J. Varano.

Residents with Monday and Tuesday garbage pickup lost their their pickups last week due to the blizzard. But Varano said public works garbage trucks will carry an extra employee for this week's pickups to grab bags left next to the robocans.

"He'll get out and walk the streets," the mayor said.

Township officials and Public Works Director Steven J. Seiler decided after the storm finally ended Monday to devote public works resources on Monday and Tuesday to clearing the streets.

"It's very hard to work it out, when you miss two days," Varano said. "Our drivers are extremely exhausted. They can't go on too much longer."

The calendar also played a part in the decision to not try and make up the pickup days. Two major holidays fall within the one week period. That decision translated into a two-week wait for garbage service for some residents, since the township only has once-a-week pickup.

Residents with Monday or Tuesday pickups should put their garbage on top of the cans, where animals can't get to it. Fortunately, the weather is cold enough so the garbage will keep until the next pickup, the mayor said.

An earlier statement that residents could bring bagged garbage to the public works yard was incorrect.

Regular garbage pickup for those with pickups slated the other days of the week resumed on Wednesday.
